Candela bass management
« on: 7 Jul 2010, 09:22 pm »
I currently use a preamp with HT Bypass and it also has bass management where I can tell it to send i.e. 60Hz and below to the sub and 60Hz and above to my FR and FL speakers. I've been interested in trying out a tube preamp for a while and was wondering how the bass management is handled using the Candela. I didn't really see any rear views on the website and don't remember anything about bass management in the reviews.

:duh:

Any feedback appreciated.

It doesn't have any bass management like most of the preamps. Get an extra pair of outputs, and connect it to your sub.

If your FL and FR speakers only go down to 45Hz (not full range speakers) they still get the full range signal then? Wouldn't that make some bass heavy music sound boomy or loose?

My HSU ULS-15 has bass management. If you ran the preouts to the sub and set the Low and High frequencies on the sub and then out to the speakers would that make your music sound out of sync, i.e. bass playing a ms or so before the other speakers?

Well, mine goes down only to ~90Hz ... and i have the same problem.

Talk to klaus and see if he can whip up something special for you. I'd love to have a preamp that does bass management.

Or else, get a behringer or marchand active crossover, and that should solve your issue.

Thanks for the response.

Don't you have to completely remove the crossover circuitry from the speakers before you can use an external crossover so everything works correctly?

I don't own any active crossover .. but my understanding is that you can use a 2 way cross over, and set the XO point at say, 60Hz, and connect the <60Hz output to your sub, and >60Hz output to your amp.

FWIW, I had the second set of outs installed and send it to a sub.  Then use the crossover and volume on the sub to dial it in by ear.  I have martin Logan Ascent i's and a Velodyne SPL1200 which is set at about 80 hz, I think.  Works for me, but YMMV.

I thought this would work as well, but in my case the gain is very low. So i'm having to turn the sub volume all the way up, and even then i don't get kind of the slam that i get if i connect the sub-out from my receiver to the sub.

Hmm, well don't know what to tell you.  Mine seems to do just fine, but to be fair I dial it way down so as to seamlessly integrate with my mains.  If I turn it up much I hear too much boom and it sounds unnatural.

I do have a HT receiver going to the HT bypass on the Candela.  And I do send the LFE signal to the sub as well.  I get away with this by using a simple 2 way Radio Shack switch before the input to the sub.  Kind of a pain to remember to switch back and forth, but not that big of a deal and it works fine.  I had to do this to correct a ground loop issue.

The HT bypass in the Candela preamp is a straight through line level to the outputs. It does not have any form of bass management. Best and practical way to connect a SW to a two channel preamp in my opinion is through the SW line level inputs and adjusting levels/frequency by ear or using a sound level meter to the main speakers, either using a second set of outputs or a A/B switch box if interacting bass management from a processor receiver for movies and other video sources.
