GR Research Servo Subwoofer Build Pictures

Hi All, :D

Here are some pictures that show what's going on beneath the finish. These were built using extremely dense 1 1/8" thick MDF for the top, bottom, and sides. I swear, If this stuff hadn't of been tagged "MDF" I would have guessed that it was "HDF"! The baffles are made from solid 1 1/2" thick MDF. They will also get 1 1/8" thick MDF top and base caps like the N3S below. These will be some very solid enclosures when they're done.

The stack of 1 1/2" MDF parts on the right are the front and rear baffles. They'll get 3/4" deep by 1 1/8" wide rabbets on all 4 side before being attached.

I'll post some more pictures when they're finished.

Ruben

BTW, all but one of these is spoken for. :P

I think I might finish that last one in a Show Mappa Burl.

HI MIKE!!!

I was hoping you'd see this thread. :D

I expect to have all of these done by the end of the week!

However, they should hang out and harden for a few days before you swing by and pick yours up. Urethane doesn't harden as quickly as lacquer does. It's well worth the wait though as it's a MUCH BETTER coating.

You gonna point Mike to this thread?

Ruben I sent Mike a link last night.  :)

I'm happy to wait for superior results, just let me know when their birthday is.

They look great Ruben! Much smaller then I thought they would be, makes room placement that much easier. I was reading how these produce fantastic musical low end. It should be a great match for the N3 and Virtue with a sub-out! It would also be great if one had matching N2 or N2s to stack on top?

Those subs look well built!

Mike, will that give you a total of 6?

Are they replacing your original 3?

Rob,

I'm replacing the three I have now, which I built from birch ply. They are solid and sound good but they are butt ugly. Ruben's enclosures will not only be worlds better looking but much denser as well. Six would be a bit much but I wouldn't mind having 4 if I can scare up the $$ one of these days. The new cabs are going to take a pretty good bite out of my audio fund as it is.

Actually Bill, the jigsaw burned out. :( I'm back to using a rock and a sharpened screwdriver.

I don't expect to be using the rock and screwdriver for too much longer though. I'm currently looking at few different CNC machines. :hyper:

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the finished subs! I'm adding a little something that I've not yet done.

Get a Bosch 1587 or 1590 jigsaw.

Hi jtwrace,

Pricing depends on finish.

I'll send you pricing for the finish that this run is being done in.

BTW, I saw what you did with your servo sub. 8) I've got some design ideas in mind that require custom milled aluminum pieces. Would you by any chance be up for discussing the possibility of milling some parts for me?

Thanks,

Ruben

Here is where I ended up with this design. :D

As usual, WAF was at the forefront.

The curved face is actually a 3/4" thick Harmony style grille. I just hadn't cut the hole for the grille cloth yet. The woofer mounts flush to the surface of the face plate as does the amp on the rear plate. All primed pieces are finished in a 2 stage Pure Black urethane. Combination's of solid wood, veneer, paint, metal, granite, etc. are limitless.

They weigh 115 lbs when fully assembled. :thumb:

These pictures were taken last week. I'm currently letting the clear harden up some more before I polish.

More pics when they're all gussied up!

Ruben
