N3 and Sure amp + servosub
« on: 23 Jun 2010, 11:18 pm »
I'm planning on getting the n3s later this summer(as my finances permit).  I have a 15 watt Sure amp that I guess would suffice, right?  I read here that Danny uses a "servo sub", I don't see any kits for that on the GR site, where is it?  Also, do I need a sub out on the Sure amp because I don't have one?

Thanks

The kits are described in the "Drivers" section at the bottom of the page for the subwoofer driver. The amplifiers to use are in the "Electronics" section.

Or the finished version is the F12G model (Dannys GR version) at http://www.rythmikaudio.com/products1.html

Hope that helps.

There's really not much to it.  You can get one 4 Ohm sub or I think a pair of 8 Ohm subs and match them to any of the servo amps.  Build the box according to the plans offered or try something different.  Keep in mind the correct internal volume required for each sub.  The box should be well-braced.  Finish the outside as desired with paint or veneer.

I can tell you the single sub mated to the 370 watt servo amp is a beast in disguise.  At a moderate volume you can barely tell it's working except of course for the accurate, musical bass being played.  Crank it with a movie and you will feel the walls shake!

Thanks guys! So :  choose an amp and driver and make a solid box (and no rez or is this an option).  The wiring portion is just two wires too solder?  And from the looks of things I don't need a dedicated sub out, right?

What about the ob subs, are they of interest with the N3s?  Where would the info for the ob subs be?

I built the N2x's and used the 15 Watt Sure amp  for a few weeks...then I bought a vintage 70watts per channel marantz amp and preamp.......not even close.  While I think the sure amp was great for a desktop setup I personally don't think it will do justice to the N3's

The open baffle version is here: http://www.gr-research.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=141

There are 4 wires used and you don't even have to solder them. There are binding posts right on the driver that are spring loaded.

And if you need cabinets, Ruben can build some really nice ones for you:

Thanks for the replies.  Ruben makes incredible stuff but I will make my own.  I might have a cabinet maker I sometimes use do the veneering for me.  It will depend on funds...

My understanding is that 15 watts will do better with the N3s than the Neo2s, right?  I have x-ls encores right now, are the Neo2s harder or easier to drive?  In any event I'm going to try... :D

Yes they are easier to drive and I guarantee you will love what you hear....just don't hook them up to something more powerful and you will forever be happy.

All of those speakers are 8 ohms and easy to drive.

X-LS is 87db senisitivity.
N2X is 85db senisitivity.
N3's are 90.5db senisitivity.

Here is a peak SPL calculator:

Here is a thread on an OB H-Frame build (the plans on the website are for W-frame).

Is it possible to be forever happy with any piece of audio equipment?

Thanks for the links Don.  To calculate my spl, you know that you have to spoon feed me information right?  So is my Sure amp 15 watts per channel or do I divide that in half?

The rating is 15 watts per channel.  :D
3 decibels is twice as loud.

Would OB servo subs integrate with an N3? I'm liking what I read about the non-energizing of the room. That's exactly what I need.

Is there a plan I can use to create a couple single driver OB's?

You could but the SPL levels would be low. I'd recommend at least two per side.

Really? That's interesting. Even in my small room, huh? So two per side with an N3. I guess I'll have to peruse that thread. Thank you.
