What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes

That's true love & homegrown tomatoes

Every year I put in a tomato patch and this year, because of an unusually long spring, my plants are looking pretty good. Tucson, AZ has a short fruit setting season, the trick is to get the plants big and flowering before the 100 degree heat kills the pollen. I plant seeds in peat pots the first week in January, transplant into 16oz. drink cups around Feb 1st, and put the little guys in the ground Feb 27th.

The tomato harvest starts June 1st and goes until the plants burn out from the heat.

This year I'm growing Supersweet 100, Early Girl, Celebrity, Roma, Nichols Heirloom, and Prescott Heirloom, these varieties do well in the heat and mature quickly. I start with 50 plants, plant 19 and give the rest away to my friends, then it is a race to see who harvests the first red tomato.

The best potting soil I have found is FoxFarm Ocean Forest Soil. The little seedlings blast off after being transplanted into the drink cups and are very vigorous and healthy when they are put into the garden.

How is everyone's garden growing?

That Fox Farm stuff is fantastic. I am currently growing six varieties of heirlooms. Blue Fruit, Ruffled Yellow, Black Cherry, Cherokee Purple, Paul Roberson and Big Zebra. The farm we get our CSA from grows 150 different heirloom varieties. I will post some pics later.

My neighbor is growing Black Cherry and Big Zebra and gave me some samples. Both varieties have strong, complex and unique flavors, they were not what I expected a tomato to taste like. Looking forward to pics.

In central TX have the same problems as Wayne in AZ, just 30 days later.  The race is to get your fruit set by June and keep the vines going until July.  I'll have to look for those Nichols and Prescott varieties.  I love those heirlooms, but have only had success with them in the rare cool summers.

This is the first year I am trying the Nichols and Prescott heirlooms, they are doing very well in the heat and are heavy with fruit. Both varieties have a less acidic taste. Native Seed Search has the seeds:

When I bought my house here some friends made us a garden when we moved in.  We found out that the squirrels around here are voracious little buggers.  The ate most everything even stealing whole eggplants.  I gave up...  You guys have those problems?

My cousin had a problem with squirrels until her daughter moved into the upstairs apartment after graduating from the University of Chicago, it wasn't the degree that stopped the squirrels from raiding the garden but her cute hyperactive pit bull named Pig.
