How big is your music collection?
« on: 17 Jun 2010, 09:21 pm »
How many LP's, CD's, downloads?

How many of them do you listen to routinely, occasionally, never?

How does your investment in music compare to what you've put into your equipment?

Let's see, my spreadsheet says I have 1,432 albums.

I'd estimate that 500 of those are CDs. Rest are mp3, aac, etc.

Not big enough!

I noticed in iTunes last night that my library was in the neighborhood of 850 albums. I estimate that only 1% of those are digital downloads, otherwise they are CD rips to hard drive. My vinyl collection is meager--only about 80 black disks.

In Itunes you can turn on song "play count" under View options. Filtering by thay column I can see that some songs are blank. so I havent listened to probably 20% of my 850 albums. last.fm makes it clear what I listen to the most (since 2007 anyway)

What would a reasonable value for a CD/Album be? new or used? so average = $10? (I think I only have a couple of rare $25+ CDs and just surprised myself buying a vinyl album over $100 ) But lets round it off and say $9000 worth of music media. That's about 75% of the value of my music gear. Roughly.

About 2500 lp's in storage
About the same # of redbook
300-350 SACD's/DVDa's

Very few media files in comparison, about 40

Large enough where I don't like moving.  There's probably another 300 CD-Rs not pictured.
The albums appear to be multiplying since I took this picture.
As to cost, I have no idea.  25% of the artists get 75% of the playing time.

Up to 650gb, bout 26,100 files & growing everyday. All on a 2tb external, of course backed up on another external.

Have a Transporter (Modwright) has really opened my mind and ears to listening to more music then I ever dreamed of. Has definitely enriched this hobby of mine :thumb:

I agree.  There's nothing wrong with talking about your latest purchase, but soliciting others for this kind of information is along the lines of asking 'How much money do you make?'  Hopefully people will remember that this is an audio board or we'll soon be seeing questions like 'How big is your penis / your wife’s boobs?'

Probably 350 SACDs/DVD-As and DADs and about 800 CDs.  I guess I have a bunch (few dozen) of cassettes around too (many made when I had a turntable from a Mobile Fidelity or other good source.

Why? Maybe just to see if the AC'er are just as enthusiastic about collecting music as they are cables?

The OP didn't only ask how many but indirectly asked about listening habits. A fair question with those who have many thousands of albums.

Does it always have to be a who's stick is bigger analogy?

I have around 600 CD's.  They are fairly evenly split between Classical (Beethoven and later), Jazz and Rock.

I have probably 50 CD's that I've played less than 10 times.   I have 30 - 40 CDs that I listen to frequently, depending on my mood.   The rest I listen to 5 - 6 times a year.

As of yesterday, I have 13,300 albums, all on hard drive, not counting thursdays downloads. I would say I haven't heard the complete album of about 90% of my library. Much of the time I sample the tracks, do the download, then forget about it. It's the result of downloading 3-5 albums each and every day.

I've probably got around 300 CD-R's that I've burned for the car but other than that, I'm totally computer audio.  :D

I use J.River Media Center and it's favorite feature of mine is it's radio feature which will either randomly play tracks from your library or you can set up the radio to numerous parameter settings for it to follow. I use the random selection a lot for the variety.  8)

As it is with my system, I don't keep track of the money drain,,, it's too depressing. I don't want to know.  :duh:

edit: as Wayner mentioned a few posts ahead, my whole library is backed up on 2 exterior 750G hard drives while the main library is on one 1.5T interior hard drive. All my drives are Seagate, I'll use nothing but.  :thumb:

Cheers,
Robin
