treating a protruding fireplace corner?
« on: 13 Jun 2010, 04:56 pm »
I was wondering if you guys could give me a piece of advice on treating a protruding (positive if you will) corner of a fireplace that is close to the  first reflection of my left channel...

I have GIK Tri-Traps floor to ceiling in both front corners now (as well as a few other positive changes to the room that are of no concern at the moment), and am ready for round two of treatments before my new speakers arrive... A large portion of the fireplace hearth wall will be treated....  With new speakers, will come new speaker placement, the system will be split and moved to two racks on either side of the TV... I have done some measuring and think I am going to need to treat the corner of the fireplace closest to the left front speaker.

The fireplace is represented by the black rectangle on the left side wall... It sticks out 8" into the room.

I have though of just a regular 242 panel custom fit, or an art panel with matching brick pattern OR... ???

Will I need to treat both edges of the corner or could I get away with just doing the outward facing (front) edge of the fireplace?

Any new ideas or approach I should consider here???

Thanks so much

I just wanted to add a couple of details... I am mainly wondering if I should treat BOTH sides of that protruding corner.
Also, an art panel showing the brick pattern would look the best but I dont know if I want to spend that kind of $ on this. Im ok with a regular 242, but is there a thinner option I should know about? Thinner for this application it seems would help alleviate any 'sore thumb' aspect.

Thanks again

I found these:

They are only 2" thick. I think that will work better for this application...

How bout gettin one of those round columns whose name I can't think of that would allow you to fine tune by rotating?  But, hey, you may be not even need them unless your stage is wierd.  Listen first.

Still listenin with your Dyn's?

I agree with Jim,if you aren't getting some weird sounds,I wouldn't do anything. If you are,I would experiment with the front speaker placement(toe-in,spacing,etc.) before I spent any money. Is the window behind the equipment softened up?That could help also, maybe some heavy drapes. But hey, that's just me and I'm a cheapskate!! Good luck.

Another option is something like our Screen Panel which is freestanding and can easily be folded when not in use.

I am system-less at the moment, while making some changes to accommodate new speakers. Ive gone Daedalus!  :D

Decal,

Good sensible  suggestion... I will be waiting until the dust settles to see if I truly do need to take care of this protruding corner... And yes, the windows have thick velvet curtains bunched up, hanging on all windows. I an still putting some treatments behind them in key spots though...

And Bryan,

Thanks for the screen suggestion. That may come in use for the back at some point.

Thanks guys
