Got my 901 w/ caps, buffer and battery Friday;
sounds great w/ stock tube, bbbbbbuuuuuuutttttttt

I was wondering:

Parkfly - are you still using the RCA 6189?
I have one of those and a Sylvania version

RobbG - did you like the tubes you ordered?

I also have some Telefuken 12AU7's & 12AX7,
Jan Phillips 12AX7WA, Amperex Orange Globe
12AX7, VTL 12AU7WA, Jan Phillips 5814A,
CBS Hytron 5814, Raytheon 5814

Also I have been running it as a preamp only
on the batteries w/ the charger plugged in for
three days and the voltage stays at 29 volts

I never tried those 5751 tubes, but have tried the RCA, GE, Tung Sol, and Sylvania NOS. I keep looking for a Raytheon, but not at the $100 price tag that everyone wants. Any of these are better than the 12ax7 family. I tried a lot of the 5814 tubes also. Those are not as good either.

That Sylvania is very hard to beat. The sound is almost sinful.

I assume you have tried one

It is an improvement over the JJ, better fuller bass, dynamics
depth.

I will play thi one for a few days

Are you still using the Syl GB 5751 or the GE?.

After dragging my feet for weeks, I finally sent my M901 to Gary for the tube buffer and bypass caps. I've been on headphones all week

but I'm sure it'll be worth it

Does the stock JJ need any burn in to settle into its signature? I'll probably use it for a couple months, then go shopping for something premium.

Before 100 hours burn-in, lots of hiss. I've talked a few customers off the ledge before full break-in.

Decided to try out some tube rolling of my own, got a GE 5751 Grey plate and an RCA 5751 Black plate. After listening, just realized that I actually had the tube buffer switched OFF the whole time.

Let's try this again...

I am supposed to have my 451 delivered soon (tomorrow or Saturday, I think). I wanted to know more about the 100-hour break-in time. Does the break-in have to occur at high(er) volumes, or will running the unit at any volume suffice? Reason is, playing at loud volumes all day long isn't feasible for me. And, other than the volume hiss, what should I expect to hear in terms of "break-in sound" that should go away after the 100-hour mark?

P.S. Hopefully I have endured my last amp-less movie tonight. My TV's speakers (only option until the 451 arrives) just plain suck.

I may be wrong on this but I thought that T-amps should always be run with a load (burning in or otherwise). So it's probably best to err on the side of safety and connect a load anyway.

If you don't want to disturb the cat/baby/neighbours, use load resistors but make sure that they are rated high enough to cope.

Again, my opinion, but I can't see how the amp will be burned in without a load.

Roger told me that there will always be a tiny amount of load on the system regardless of whether speakers are attached, and that this would be sufficient for burn-in providing an ongoing input signal. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So to me this would indicate that you could break in the Sensation with the volume pot turned all the way down to zero. This because the amp would still be getting an input signal, but it would not be passing this to a speaker load. Is this correct? Or would turning the pot down to zero prevent the "back half" of the amp from burning in? Thanks for any replies.

I think I'm missing something here.....why would you NOT connect your speakers to the amp AND play music through them for burn in? Isn't the point of having the amp to play music, allllllll the time?!

Cami, I'm planning to play music through the Sensation as much as possible. However, I can't play this amp 24/7 at loud volumes without bothering the household and my neighbors. I was trying to figure out if having the amp 'on' and 'receiving an input signal' would be enough to burn the amp in during periods when I couldn't have it on and rocking the house beams.

Hope that makes sense. I am trying to get through the break-in period as quickly as possible without straining neighborly relations.
