Friday I receive my new ProAc D18.
Wow, great speakers.  :D

Great speakers.

We have the same nice cherry finish.

I have the Model ProAc Response 3.8.

You'll find that they need to be pointed straight ahead rather than a toed-in or the sound stage will be too narrow.

It's been years since I visited here. I'm trying to pick up my old hobby, which ended due to not achieving my expectations from previous systems, listening rooms and memory.

My system needs some attention, so I started today by giving a decent mains block. This way I don't need to use extention cables blocks anymore:

From a Canadian perspective - that's one strange looking mains block...gotta be a "Euro" thang...

It is. Many advantages over American plugs: better connection, better contact, does not bend, sturdier.
The Supra block is a nice one. Basically only outdone by the Kemp one. Good choice!

hi, folks!

i finally bought this one here:

i'm doing the vinyl recordings in Mhz (DSD). what you get is a recording that has SACD quality!!! almost any other sample rate is possible then. the recorder's software allows to create own DSD discs and redbook cds. what you need to play the DSD-discs is a Sony player (SCD-XA 5400 or SCD-XE800 for example) or the Sony Playstation. some Sony Vaio laptops can read the DSD format as well.
however, after having recorded a vinyl in let's say 5.6Mhz it's possible to convert it in a sample rate that you need. i decided to go for 176.4Khz/24bit as 5.6Mhz derives from 44.1 (and 176.4 is a multiple of 44.1.).
now the BDP-1 plays high resoluted files with supreme sound :thumb:. great!

That KORG recorded looks really interesting - Canadian company, as I understand it.  Sure beats those cheap turntable / usb setups for converting vinyl to digital.

thanks, guys. the recorder gives me the chance to "master" the sound, cause the source in this case is vinyl (you can feed the unit with digital coax signals, too). i like the idea behind this concept as it is very similar to studio standard. i don't wanna claim that it is absolutely of the same quality BUT basically any sample rate is taken from the analog mastertapes as far as i know.
vinyl is really cool as it is an analog copy of the music. if you have the vinyl...you can choose the sample rate you wish. the problem with sample rates is that once they are fixed (like a 44.1khz/16bit redbook cd or even any other) they cannot really be changed anymore. so only by adjusting your computer's soundcard to a higher sample rate like 192/24 doesn't improve the "value" of a 44.1/16 file. sure...it will work and yes you can hear music, of course. but it doesn't really makes sense. however, if you want pure analog sound get vinyl! if you then want good recordings take that vinyl and choose a sample rate which is higher than redbook standard (and feed the BDP-1 with these files...wow :D).

Dave,

if you ask me...yes it is. the cd surely is a cool format BUT it is limited due to its resolution of 44.1/16. just take a look at www.hdtracks.com
they offer hi res music from the mastertapes. my understanding is that they use the analog tape in order to define the final sample rate.
regarding my own recording results i have to say that compared to "regular" stuff it happens that i can listen more "into" the recording/sound. even the speaker's woofer moves more when hi res stuff is playing :thumb:.  that's the great thing about vinyl...it represents the analog waveform in its native form without being "interrupted" by any mathematical treatment (or whatever you may call it). vinyl rules! anything else is just a nice attempt to reproduce the analog waveform - even if it is high resolution material. in any way it will always be a COPY of the original waveform! but in general you can expect hi res stuff to have more substance than 44.1/16 stuff (given that the source material is analog).

anyone who has different opinions/experiences about what i wrote down here is welcome to share his own thoughts.

Sounds good. I agree that vinyl is the best. Basically, I just play my records. I have a good cartridge and turntable, and it's set up properly. But, if you wanna load them into a BDP-1, more power to ya. It certainly eliminates any possible record wear, and keeps your LP collection intact.

So, this what 30 years has brought us, back to where we were..? Perfect sound, only this time forever because the vinyl does not wear anymore?

I have very little knowledge and audiophile experience with vinyl but I would like to believe that current state of the art is capale of delivering more. At least when the source is 'upto date' high resulotion.

It does sound like a very cool device though if you want to digitize your analog recordings in the best possible way.  :thumb:

the gear that is available these days is able to reproduce music at very high standards. take any company you want...personal taste is most important, i think. sure, gear is always a matter of budget but if you know what is "important" then the sound can reach superb performance! the industry has to realize that there is more than MP3 that makes it worth to listen to music. hdtracks & co is a good start :thumb:

Vinyl is king. Like you said, you have little experience. When vinyl is played back on good equipment and the turntable is set up right, and the vinyl is in good shape, the results are superb.
