Hi...No,actual true shock.I've been thinking about at some point getting a bike actually.
I can't even think of a motorcycle again.  I have seen people maimed, killed and as bad:  paralyzed by spine injuries.  They were all experienced, safe drivers.  All of that is rendered moot when someone blows past a red light, or something falls from a truck---or maybe a deer jumps out.  Often there is no warning, no reaction time.  No thanks.

I have to agree with you.I love the freedom it represents but the reality can be deadly as you've pointed out.I would be a green horn all the way making it extra dangerous for this oldguy.

I can't imagine anyone going 165 mph on a motorcycle on a public road.  That's absolutely insane.  The only place for that is on a racetrack, and even then.......!

I used to ride a motorcycle but gave it up due to having a few friends who had accidents and also because I was tired and unnerved at drivers who made eye contact with me and then pulled out in front of me treating me like I was a slow-moving bicycle.

Maybe again in another time and a smaller town.  Or maybe putting around on a Vespa in a small town in Italy waving Ciao! to the local townsfolk.

The road in question was a stretch of Nevada with nothing for 100 miles...I mean...nothing...no one. at all.

I know what you're saying about a deserted road, but at that speed anything could happen.  I was on an Interstate only doing about 75 mph when I quickly came upon, and ran over, a small piece of 2X4 that I couldn't avoid (but luckily regained control).  Any small thing at high speeds could take you out.  Like a June Bug.

That's why I sold my last bike about 16 years ago.  Never again.  A small patch of sand is enough to drop a bike at any speed.    The other thing that wasn't mentioned:  The extremely expensive speeding tickets that could result, massive court costs, loss of licence or even jail.  Much like death or paralysis, young people think they are invincible and untouchable..."Nah, I never get tickets" turns into $6,000 in court costs really fast.  I avoided that, thankfully.

No, it was just a massive june bug slamming into me at max closing speed.

LOL. I ran into a cloud of grasshoppers once while doing about 85 riding a bike out in the prairies...felt like getting hit with rubber bullets and I had to slow down because the visor quickly became a near-solid mass of dead bugs. So I lifted the visor and the wind blew a ounce of dead bug juice in my face. Bleh.

I sold my last bike, a Honda VFR, because I seemed unable to ride as slow as I should, despite my best intentions. (Poor impulse control.) I had one accident during 7 yrs of riding...wiped out on a corner when the road surface changed camber (angle) and the tires lost grip...slid for >100 ft but not a scratch thanks to wearing top-of-the-line gear head to toe. I remember sliding and thinking: "The gear works!" But I was lucky...if I had hit a concrete barrier or even a road sign while sliding, it would have ended very differently.

I just stopped at a bike shop 1/2 hour ago on the way home (it's just up the street) and checked out the new bikes, but I doubt I'll ever buy another one. They're fun. And dangerous. And part of the fun is the danger. But I'll quit while I'm ahead. I had a great run, went on several tours -- coast to coast and back one summer -- all with no injuries, but never again. Aside from people I know who've died, I know of some who were badly injured and unable to work for long months afterward, etc. Not fun, physically nor financially.

Now I'm blowing my money on audio gear rather than motorcycle gear, and audio is a cheaper hobby so far...so far....

Also, I took scuba lessons this summer, which is definitely a rush, yet statistically far, far safer than motorcycling. And there's a ton of cool gear to buy...ooh, shiny!

Really?  I must have blown 50 grand on stereo gear between 98 and 2006.  However, I have yet to worry about being jackknifed at 70mph by my sub... :P

LOL. Yah, stereos are much less likely to cause bodily harm.

I just got back into stereo recently -- not coincidentally, after I sold my last bike. I probably spent about $40k on several bikes and gear...haven't spent anywhere near that on stereo...yet.

What we need are light-cycles. Those things turn on a dime...

Yeah and you can speed up and de-rez those sob's that cut you off in traffic against a 90 degree jet wall.  ;)

My VMPS larger sub is around 100lbs. Would definitely crack a foot bone or two.

I don't know if this counts as an acquisition or not but I built a new cabinet for my VPI 17 to give it a new lease on life.  Before that, a second Bedini Ultra Clarifier for the downstairs system.
Motorcycles are kind of dangerous (cars, semis and deer all seem to want to jump in your lap) but I've been riding just about daily for 33 years now and hope to do so for another 33.

Good for you!  I've been riding since 1970 and have had two accidents...both occurred in my garage.  But, on the other hand I've had the be jesus scared out of me numerous times.

When I was a kid (up till I was about 20), I was fearless on a motorcycle.  Then, I quit riding motorcycles until my early 40's.  I went out and bought a Harley and kept it a couple of years.

I really struggled to get comfortable with cars and trucks when riding the Harley.  When I was young, that was never an issue.

Then, a good friend of mine was killed in a motorcycle accident.  Once that happened, the wife really started putting pressure on my to quit riding, so I sold it.

My latest audio acquisition was my Denon DCM-390 SACD/redbook CD player.  It's very picky about my disks. Some of them will skip and I have to take them out and clean them.  In some instances, I've had to re-rip them to new CD-Rs.  I rip them using Apple lossless format.

I'm still thinking about building a music server.  I'm hung up on which audio card to choose.

I have known 4 people killed, and one with a c-1 break in his spine...total paralysis.  All of these accidents were unavoidable by the rider.  That is, objects /cars/etc in the road.  I hung my helmet up permenently in 1992.
