Battery life is the biggest reason to upgrade..... So for one solid reason...I can enjoy the perks... Long live the iPhone.. down with the resistance.. BTW.. the EVO Android is HUGE... very HUGE.. be afraid with it's kickstand..  ... It was totally disappointing..

I was comparing an iPhone 4 to the Evo HTC.  I know the iPhone will synchronize with iTunes seamlessly and has the Remote app to control it.

Will the Evo perform these same tasks, or is there too much trouble and workaround?

Lastly, is the non-user replaceable battery in the iPhone something to worry about?

EVO didn't have a user replaceable battery...

EVO does have a user replaceable battery (right out of the box, my brother-in-law showed me how easy it was, the battery was even matched to the internal section...red, IIRC).  It uses the same battery as the Touch Pro 2, but it eats through juice really quickly.  It has its issues, I'm hearing...and yes, it's quite large.  Very thin, but big.  The camera sticks out a bit too...with a case on it, I dont know how well it would fit in a pocket.  My IPhone was always flawless without a case.  It was perfect for sticking in a pocket with a wallet and not at all being a nuisance.  The EVO has a $10 fee for many users too depending on what service is available in their area.

ATT still sucks.  So unfortunately...while the new IPhone will likely be incredible, it won't be for me.

Hrm... friend had case on EVO but i thought it had more girth :)    Funny part is he's all sorts of issues syncing music, video, email, notes etc to it..     He's a flash developer so I will just let him flop around helplessly... and yes we are good friends.

I would like to hear from someone who has AT&T and chose to switch for a Droid.  Also as long as you don't live in the middle of nowhere AT&T is perfect.  Also if to travel out of the contry AT&T is the only chose as non GSM networks are crap.

I'm not an AT&T user, but wanted to correct you on the point that T-Mobile is also a GSM type phone, so you can use that outside of the country (Europe).
I've been researching this area, and it seems many people opt to buy their smartphones outright, especially
Nokia, and use them with a low level data plan.
I wonder how many people with the new Apple iPad 3G are going to get upset with AT&T with their new tiered
data limiting plan.

Yeah I know T-mobile is GSM but they even have dead spots in NYC.  AFAIAK Droid and iPhone are the only "smart phones" in their class.  The others just don't have the software applications.

I've been toying with updating my Blackberry to an I-Phone when my current package matures at the end of this month. The announcement of the new IPhone 4 is very timely indeed.

However, speaking to current I-Phone users here in New York City and Long Island I'm revising my opinion. They all seem to say that calls get dropped regularly. Yes, things have gotten better than they were but they are still spotty here because of so many I-Phone users subscribed. The lines are jammed.

They also say that as good as the whole package is, the Blackberry is still better for e-mails and business usage. The I-Phone is better if you are browsing th web regulary and want to play games and donload special apps and such.

I think I may just stay with my trusty Blackberry at this point.

I had At&T and I live in Long Island and Work in NYC far from the sticks. I switched b/c I found myself asking my Verizon user friends to borrow there phone so I can make a call. Since then got a Droid and could'nt be happier, I never get a dropped call , including in all tunnels. Yeah Google has more of a user learning curve but also alot more flexibility IMO. Where Apple/ATT is like we are goin to give you this real kool user friendly interface/os to exist in but give you sub standard service and more expensive apps, also hear the GPS mapping is much better on Android os.

AT&T sucks, but if you want the Iphone your somewhat stuck with them.  Just keep in mind folks that the Iphone was the first at EVERYTHING then all others followed.  Iphone revolutionize the cell phone industry and apple is the app king indeed!  Like anything else, you have the good the bad and the ugly, you can't get perfect in all areas....

I use an iPhone 3Gs/AT&T, and for the last ~6 months or so, I've not really had any significant issues with calls being dropped and such.  Call quality has not been as good as I've heard on Verizon phones, but overall its been MUCH better than what it had been in the past...

I live and work in nyc and have been using the iphone 3g for almost 2 yrs. In my experience, AT&T is NOT perfect. It's very annoying when I don't receive some calls even though i have a signal. It will show a message that there's a new voicemail even though there was no missed call. But there are a lot of things that I like about the iphone that's why I upgraded to 4 and didn't switch to android.

I have a question for the new iphone users, when you play pandora does the sound only comes out on the right built-in speaker? Is the left one a microphone and not a speaker?

Like so many products, each phone and service provider has its pros and cons.

I'm still on the fence, and I don't know that these xtra normal Text-to-Movietm clips help any, but they sure are funny!

My take on the evo 4g vs. iphone 4 video (i've owned both, and i'm keeping the iphone)

it has a bigger screen
yes, but the colors are washed out and the glass tends to lift at the bottom.
also... the bigger screen has fewer pixels.

it has 3x faster web access
yeah, 4G was nice when i could get a signal... for those few fleeting moments before it drained the battery.

it has higher res front and back cameras
yes, more pixels but inferior optical quality. particularly for video.

it doesn't require you to be on wifi for video chat
true, although if i cared about that in the least it still wouldn't matter because skype w/ video chat will be out soon for the iphone 4.

it has a replaceable battery
it has to have a replaceable battery. battery life isn't in the ballpark of the iphone 4.

it has replaceable memory
this would be a great feature... if 32gb micro sd cards were cheap.

it is customizable...
yes, it is just like ubuntu. there was huge potential for tweaking and making it work the way i wanted, which was cool. the amount of time i was spending doing just that was pissing my wife off to no end and i probably would have ended up getting a divorce cause of it. iOS 4, on the other hand, gives me a lot less options but is pretty much "okay" out of the box.

it's cheaper monthly
i don't really get this one. there's a $10 monthly tack-on fee and sprint doesn't really have good options for family plans (unless you want to pay $150/month for an everything data plan with 3 lines). plus lightweight users can now pay $15/month for data from at&t. basically seems like a wash to me.

i shot two videos today, and i can't get over the video quality:
http://www.pandathumbaudio.com/download/IMG_0144.MOV
http://www.pandathumbaudio.com/download/IMG_0153.MOV

i love this phone, it's on a completely different level relative to anything else out there right now IMO.

I could not agree more, not could I have qualified it better.  Not to mention that HTC' (droid incredible, x) does not have a QC record even close to apple. The droid is fun, nice features, but I too will stick with my Iphone 4.
BTW:  the new episode of futurama was a slam on the smartphone craze.  It depicted momco  selling an implant, "Eye-phones."  Good episode.
