Absolutely correct, but most pieces usually don't go quite that low.  40 Hz is probably a common bottom....

As for the Bosendorfer, does it have an extended keyboard?  I've never played or heard a piece that used the entire 88 key range.  As a teenager, I often played on a Steinway built  before the 88 key became standard... it only had 85 and lacked the top three notes.  Never needed them. Sure wish I still had that instrument

97 keys:

It's something awesome.

Hi--I think the bottom note on the piano is more like 27 cps, so you need speakers and room that will allow development of  waves from 27 through 40  for the piano to sound realistic.

The spectral content will extend well below the frequency of the fundamental of any note played on an instrument, especially a plucked/hammered string instrument. This is a common misconception - that the fundamental frequency of the lowest note on some instrument defines the lowest frequency needed for its accurate reproduction.

Thx...

Agree, but it will decay much faster than the fundamental + upper armonics. This is what makes it sound like a percussion instrument.

Now if you have some nasty room modes that will sustain it......  :duh:

You guys may try this:

I'm waiting for the BDP-1 to check the hi-res version.

That is a very nice piano sound of the close and wide variety.

If you prefer a little more distance, you may like track 17b of this disc:

...of course I might be a little biased!

I'm donning my asbestos suit here as this has been criticized on a number of levels (which don't stand if you understand what this is). A live recording of an extremely fast and passionate Rachmaninov 3rd Concert.

So if you want to try some piano fireworks in a live (not studio) recording this is it:

(this is the remastered edition with a little bit fuller sound).

More piano -- an excellent performance and recording transferred to Hybrid SACD by Esoteric in Japan.

Well, sort of.  Although this is a very worthwhile cd, it is a recording of a sophisticated player piano using the "rolls" laid down by Rachmaninoff.  Regardless, it has good dynamics and is truly a window  into the mind of the composer.  Definitely a must for a Rachmaninoff fan.

...and the Ampico recording device is not your everyday player piano, as it encodes dynamics as well as the notes themselves.  Digitally tied to a Bosendorfer, the cd accomplishes it goal of bringing the maestro's performance back to life.  If you are a Rachmaninoff fan, you should own this cd.

Not really. Would anyone go to concerts just to watch a machine..

I'm more interested in how a human plays it. It brings variety, and you will get renewed interest with each new performance.

Makes one wonder why Rachmaninoff bothered to make the rolls in the first place.

Dunno. Maybe he was fascinated with the technology. If you want to hear an acoustic recording of Rachmaninoff playing the piano, all hope is not lost:
