I saw this today too.  This weekend they were going for $169.99 so I'd say that price certainly isn't shabby.  I'd really like one myself :)

More info from another forum:

The ipod touch 8GB will NOT support multitasking with the upcoming 4.0 software.

No voice control on the 8GB "3rd" gen iPod Touch. Sorry. I feel you on the warranty thing and new "freshness" though.

I have two 8GB iPod Touches (2nd & "3rd" gens) which I will be giving to the kids or selling when the 4th gens come out. Epecially since some OS 4 features will not work on them. Specifically multitasking.

If you only want/need 8GB I would suggest you wait. If you can't get a 32GB or 64GB 3rd gen so you can take advantage of all OS 4 features. Then again, the 4th gens are rumored to finally get a camera.

Guess it all depends on what exactly you plan to use the device for.  Sometimes I think people feel they must have the newest latest and greatest, but only end up using a 10th of what comes with the product and they would have been just fine with the older version.  I fall into this category LOTS and LOTS of times :)

bumping my own thread

Still on the fence with this.  My main purpose of buying the Touch would be to add the app. Perl, and use it as my remote to my HTPC hard drives for music selection.  I am wondering how many AC members have tried this and the Squeezebox Touch.  Pros and Cons for the two as remotes?  I am sure the SB Touch offers more bells and whistles, but the Apple offers to be a something away from the music system as well.

Lyndon, if you haven't already done so, go to the Logitech Squeezebox forums and search through the posts on this topic. I think you'll find some useful info.

Next refresh is probably going to be around September.

Third generation 8 GB one is same as second generation 8 GB one; 32 and 64 GB ones are true third generation products.

Here is another one if you don't want to pay sales tax:  http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2078474&highlight=ipod

If you search the same forums for iPod, you will even see first generation iPod Touches for around $100 or less.  Don't know if it has sufficient computing power for your needs, but might be worth investigating.  I think price of any iPod Touch that won't support the 4.0 multi-tasking OS has really dropped because of that.

i would wait for the new one because the new features will be useful not just faster or more capacity.
I am kind of bummed that the 8gig os3 touch is not upgradeable.

with all that said I hope to get an iphone4 when business picks up  :|

And I don't believe the new one will be either.  That's the rub.
You have to step up to the 16 or 32 gig for the newer processor.
