Sub placement question
« on: 9 May 2010, 11:53 pm »
Bob-I thought I saw a thread on sub placement but can't find it, If anyone has a link to any info about sub placement I would appreciate it. Thinking of putting my sub in the corner behind my TV and up on some spare speaker stands I have, but if that idea sounds dumb please tell me. TY

Doesn't sound dumb.   Corner placement will generally have more bass reinforcement.  Depends on your room.  If you don't have an RTA, get an SPL meter and use it with test tones either from a disc or downloaded so you can get an idea of what different placement does to the bass response.

Here is one site for test tones, there are lots of others -  http://www.stompaudio.com/test-tones-c-6793.html

Depends on what you are after. If you want room filling rumble, then a corner is the way to go. If you want to have more articulated LF, and help the imaging of your mains, the sub goes dead center between the mains.

Phil--whats RTA???Real Time Analyzer?
Mike--currently centered below my center channel in front
of tv and components which are angled across a corner of
room. Boomy would be bad, I like nice rounded & defined
drum/tom sound was trying to save some space only.
If I do try it do I aim it straight out of corner? Along one
of the walls or directly into the corner? The stands would
be used to hold the sub up from behind 2 ft. tall ent. ctr. placing
it in space behind flat panel.....I'll deal with where it is now if
the other way would be too much bass...sub is heavy so moving it is
work.  :nono:

Not to be difficult, but this is why Phil was mentioning test gear (yes to your RTA question), test tones, etc. You would have to move the sub around some to see what works best. I've seen subs deployed all three ways you've mentioned. Corner placement for a sub is like placement for any monitor. It is trial and error.

Let me be very specific about my recommendation against putting the sub in the corner: You will not necessarily get too much or "boomy" bass. What you will lose across the mains is definition: soundstage and depth will shift &/ soften, with an overall lack of "coherency."

If you can tolerate where your sub is now, I'd leave it be.

You're most welcome. I know what you mean about moving stuff around. I have grown to have less and less time for it. I just want to sit down, chill out, and tune in.

Most of the "where should I place my sub" threads are placed in the Acoustics Circle.

One trick I've heard of many times is to put the sub in your listening chair and move around the room (on your hands and knees). Then place the sub where the bass is the strongest. Having an SPL meter in hand while you're crawling around (looking like a jackass to your family) will help.
