doc,

Are the findings of the Richmond Audio Society shootout posted anywhere?

Not that I know of.  That's not to say it isn't posted somewhere.  I only pointed it out because I was speaking with someone who was actually there and kept track of all the testing results.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

hometheaterdoc, what Liteon player are you referring to, the 2001?  I have heard this unit kicks butt even as a complete CD player.

yes... it's the 2001...  I picked up one to see what everyone was raving about on AVS Forum... plus I've ripped hundreds of my movies into DIVX & XVID format for travel watching with a laptop and it comes in handy for playing them in a bedroom system that doesn't have a HTPC....

The analogue section of the player is nothing to write home about at all....  really flat souding... better than most of the budget stuff out there, though...  it's a decent cheap transport and combined with the panasonic 45 and connected digitally, is a good budget setup for someone.  I get a kick out of the fact that I have been using an IXOS Ixotica glass toslink with it that retails for more than the player costs :)

I've heard the BC DAC2.  I heard it in a shootout about a year ago.. when I first started meeting fellow AC folks.

If you'd like, feel free to bring something over on the 21st.  I'm having a gathering then mainly to compare some preamps but, am including a few other goodies.  See the Critic's Circle or the NC Audiophiles Circle for more details.  Or, I could bring over some of my gear to your place and make you a believer of some of the good stuff I've found here.

Carlman,

Thanks for the invite.  I'll look into it....

I don't doubt you've found some great stuff here on AC.  There seems to be a plethora of enthusiastic audiophiles and manufacturers dedicated to great sound here on these forums.

I know this isn't the one box answer your looking for but there is a BC Dac2 on Agon for $850.

It works very well with your Modwright transport, as I have a similar model.

Well, last I checked on AgoN, it was a few hundred over your $1K limit. But a Pioneer DV-AX10 would at least make a hell of a transport.

It's got Analog Devices Multi-bit 192k / 24-bit Audio D/A Converters for the L/R channel out puts. I don't know how they sounds as I've not ever hooked the analog outs up on mine.

But it's a serious piece of hardware (weighs 54 pounds! :o ). Excellent transport. Better than any other Pioneer deck. And I found it to be slightly (very, very slightly) better than a Proceed PMDT as a transport.

I use an old Phillips CD-80 which has been with me since I worked for Sylvania when they were part of Phillips or vica-versa. Have not heard a transport yet that I really like better or is more reliable. Was looking to sell it or move up and glad I did not right now

Someone had stated on another BB that a bunch of Engineers got together at a Phillips convention or something and they agreed that the CDM-1 was the best Transport Mech they ever produced.

Now if I could get a good Multi-Player that does everything.
My choice of CD Transport also; I've owned it since 1990, never a problem. Now matched with a Bolder Smart Dio.Turned out to be an excellent purchase. :)

dont laugh to hard carlman :nono: but spend 80$ for a philips 727 or a toshiba 3950 :o  bolth 24-192

Rosconey, based on your findings, I decided to try the Toshiba 3950 and gotta say it definitely sounds better than my old Marantz Cd-63se. Of course, that's not a big compliment since my player is pretty darn old.

However, the Toshiba's mechanism is pretty noisy. Is that just the one I've got or is that normal?

Thanks!

the toshiba is a little loud loading (forcefull) and you can hear a little spinning noise -but its spinning faster than the average dvd player from what was posted at aa.
put a phone book on it
some sound coat would do wonders

a few more people at aa bought them this weekend and are very happy-for 60 bucks it sounds like a few hundred at least :o
