So tones only left channel, and also only right channel?

What kind of signals? 

There are these:

But they probably have wide-band noise.

warble tones perhaps. trying to determine balance of channels without having to disconnect wires.

You can use a program like "Audacity" to generate special test signals or download WAV tones from lots and lots of web pages.
Linkwitz Labs has some interesting test tones, some as WAV files and all on a CD.
