jtwrace,
If you turn the Traeger up all the way it will come up to 500 degrees in about 20 min.

My local Ace store sells them.  I'll go check them out tomorrow.

Good luck with your choice.
Too late for meaningful input but I'll add we have been using an Aussie gas grill with 4 cast iron burners for quite awhile now. Well made, temp control is excellent. We got hooked on smokin so much, that we invested in a Gatorpit backyard smoker, been using pecan, hickory and locally available apple. This can also double as a large grill with lump if the need arises.

Traeger's are great grills/smokers too. I have a friend that has one and sometimes he puts ribs on to smoke in the morning and leaves for work and when he comes home they are ready--moist and fall off the bone

jtwrace,
I bought the Traeger Elite model # BBQ07E 418 sq. inches cooking surface  from ACE Hardware and my son bought the BBQ075 646 sq. inches of cooking surface  his is a lot larger then mine but he has 7 people al least to feed and has parties offen. You  do realize that it is a pellet smoker BBQ and there is a large selection of  different  flavored pellets to choose from.

Ed,

have you tried an electric starter? Just stick it under a pile of charcoal, plug it in and remove it in about 15 minutes. I found it easier to use than the flue approach
Hi VL,
I have owed a couple of the electric starters throughout the years.  In my situation I would have to drag out an extension cord to get the electric unit going.  Easiest for me has been the flue, to each his/her own!

Best,

Sams Club has a nice big rectangular metal unit w/ heavy cast iron grates that can be cranked up and down. Only $130. If I still ate meat, I'd get one. Lump charcoal rocks! (way easier to find these days too)

Just got my June 2010 issue of Consumer Reports today, and lo and behold they rate gas grills.  Four recommended models under $380.00.

Please do tell!

I looked online and the Weber Genesis E-320 was rated #1 but I've already had one...

purchase the least expensive gas grill you can find for burgers and dogs and then get the BGE and don't look back, its the most versataile grill on the market and will put any gas grill to shame

I'm shocked at how many members like the Kamado style cooker.  Very cool though.  I"m looking forward to trying it.   :thumb:

I have a Lynx stainless steel, solid brass burners, propane, 10+ years old replaced rocks once still as good as new.

I would never go back to charcoal.  I live in Adirondack Mtns. in upstate NY and use it year round.

The 27" 2-burner grill is $3400.  Really?

That's cool 8) I have an outlet on my deck near the Cook n Kettle and I keep an outdoor extension cord under the grill cover. Flues do work well too. The best thing about both is no starter fluid smell :nono:

I love my Big Green Egg. I went from a charcoal Weber, to a Weber gasser and back to the BGE which burns lump charcoal.

My wife was kinda PO'ed when I sold the gasser to a neighbor without asking her. She could quickly light the Weber and grill chicken on her own and she liked the convenience factor. I bought the mini gasser which sits on my BGE table and so for my family I have the best of both worlds. http://www.amazon.com/Weber-1520-Propane-Go-Anywhere-Grill/dp/B00004RALK

Year round with the cast iron burner Aussie too!!! Brass or stainless not needed though it looks purty, Plus the Gator smokes with real wood not faux Q pellets or chips :eyebrows: :D  :)  Though I admit that can be pretty convenient at times.  Nothin like pecan/apple smoke wafting through the neighborhood on NFL Sunday.
