Bryston 4B ST vs. 4B SST squared version?
« on: 27 Apr 2010, 08:56 pm »
Hello,
Could you tell me about some of the sonic qualities that differentiate these two amplifiers? Am thinking about upgrading to the latest version of this amp and just curious what major differences there are that separate one from the other?

Would love some feedback,

Dave

Hi

I went from a sst to new version square amp, what i noticed and that was most important to me was the ability to play at low volume with all the finesse and sensation of power.

Bryston's  1st to last watt philosphy was successful in providing good low volume playback. One thing that is different and you can hear it right off the bat is the lack of glare that sst and previous models tend to have. Different sounding series of amps for sure.

I went from a 4B-ST (made at the end of 1999) to a 4B-SST2 (the latest one, with the new capacitors etc, made in Sept 2009). For information, the rest of my system consists of a BP-25, a BDA-1, and PSB Stratus Gold i speakers.

The SST2 is a much more robust amp -- music that pushes the ST into clipping doesn't even feel like work for the SST2 - it has tighter low end, and a clearer high end. It is not a super dramatic, day & night sort improvement -- the ST is a great amp, but the SST2 is both more refined and stronger -- a definite step up. I sold my ST, and that helped reduce the cost of the upgrade.

For me going from a 3B ST to a 3B SST was like going from mid-fi to hi-fi sound. SST highs are more linear, bass more authoritive. It was a foreign sound to anything I had heard before and I knew it was an elite sound, even with the rest of my mid-fi equipment.

The SST/2 IMO is a 20 to 30% improvement on the SST. More bass vibe, detail and controlled high freqencies. 8)
