shopping used allows you to try things w/o much risk, as you can re-sell w/o taking a financial bath.  and, as is clear from this thread, and even from this list, there are so many choices at any price range, let alone up to $12k...

These speakers are STUNNING.  2nd best I've heard, after the big Hansen's.

Thiel CS-3.7's.  Sensitivity 90dB, freq response  33-26K.  Great neutral sounding speaker with great resolution and clarity.  I heard these on an all Bryston set up and they sounded fantastick.  One of my favorite speakers.

I would also include the PSB Synchrony One's.  They are a great speaker with a slightly warmer sound, excellent detail, with excellent Bass. They sell for $5K.  This speaker is a sleeper and giant killer.

+1 on the Thiel CS 3.7.  As far as the WAF, they can be ordered not only in many different finishes (including matching a finish sample you send them) there are about a half dozen grill cloth choices available from dark to light.

I second the Daedalus speakers. Beautiful hardwoods, easy to place, easy to drive and best of all, great sound.
I third Daedalus, even though it is not English. My Da-RMas are at the tender mercy of Fedex at the moment, heading over the Atlantic. I made the journey the other way to RMAF last autumn, partly to hear them and I was'nt disappointed. They only go down to 38, but I plan to see how they are and maybe add in a fast, musical Sub later. At the risk of boring repetition, however good they look in a photo, they look much better in the flesh/wood.

My wife trained as an interior designer and you can only imagine the grief that has caused me in this hobby. Even she was impressed by the speakers, not the sound you understand, just how they looked.

I have been looking at a similar price range and the next most impressive, was  Devore Gibbon 9's. They look nice, but not that you would expect much. They just made a wondrful, easy, detailed sound. I liked the Art Deco speakers a lot too, but not so easy to audition in the US. Ther were some others I wanted to like, such as Coincident, but they just did'nt impress me as much

Way to go, Gears.  Those things have ceramic drivers if I'm not mistaken.  Supposed to be the cat's pajamas.  Nice size for most rooms, I would think.  Heck, I'm excited.

Id like to second the Merlin VSMs. I believe they just came out with a moderately updated version. I also liked the Ascendo C8s. Theres a speaker hidden inside the box. Merlins are better though.

Quite possibly the ugliest speakers I have ever seen.  If these have WAF, I'd think twice about the W.
