N2Xs Out of Stacked Baltic Birch Plywood
« on: 12 Apr 2010, 02:01 am »
Ok folks, I am new here but have a question about a build I am planning....

Has anyone made some N2Xs out of stacked Baltic Birch Plywood? (here is an example of the stacking thing)

I was thinking of making cabinets like the curved PE ones, but with the sides and back made out of a stack of single pieces of Baltic Birch Plywood.  Then I would do the baffle out of MDF and round the sides...

I guess kind of like this but with the baffle as a separate piece...

I thought of staining the sides and back to be a rosewood type color with some clear after the fact, and then gloss black on the baffle...

I actually have someone working on that for me and he has programmed a CNC to cut all the pieces. If he ever gets it done then I will let you guys know. I was hoping to order a bunch of flat packs from him.

Danny,

Besides the PE cabinets, have you ever offered or considered offering pre-fabbed cabinets through your place.  Not veneered necessarily (or so.. IDK) but something that was assembled w/o the network.  Just curious.  I'm looking into local builders to possibly make a cabinet but I'm thinking the PE ones will be the best/cheapest option.

That is absolutely beautiful! I guess the Baltic birch wouldn't effect S.Q.? I was thinking of eD making a flat kit for the N3 which they said they could for my budget. As long as enough dampening is used, would this be ok? I would love a custom job such as this but my budget wouldn't allow it.

Not yet. Samples are being cut and cost to build still yet to be set in stone. Hold tight.

I always thought CNC'ed birch ply was a cool idea because you could easily do something like channel all of the sides to fill with sand (or lead) and make the interior surfaces irregular, yet still precisely control the internal volume. Plus, the natural finish is sexy.

Two very good ideas there.  A few more ideas:

1. Have the CNC add three or four 1/4" holes to acommodate 1/4" rods to facilitate precision gluing alignment.  More precise alignment in glue-up means less sanding.

2. You can design in a bare minimum dimensioned flat at the rear for binding post installation if desired.

For those who do like the laminated look, it is a novice DYIers dream.  Anyone can sand and finish without needing the skills for a high quality veneering job.

Yes, that's the beauty of it! You get a luxurious natural wood along with and easier build! That laminating is tough and as easy as the iron method seems, the glues don't seem to hold for very long. I am in a very humid environment however. Bret from eD gave me a very fair price quote on a Baltic Birch flat pack for the N3, I have been wanting for a very long time. I finaly managed to save enough for just the drivers alone and I am contemplating if the platnium bypass and upgraded crossovers make that big of a difference? Can you buy this built crossover directly from Sean along with the drivers, or do you have to buy everything from GR first and then send it?

I find it odd that all that effort was put into this translam, and yet the F120A has not been rebated -- something it sorely needs.

Good observation, Dave - maybe the builder would have done that if the driver had a circular frame - much easier.

It'll be interesting to see the cost of this flat pack.
