Garmin + a laptop. Possible?
« on: 9 Apr 2010, 09:51 pm »
Hey folks,
I've never used a Garmin, Tom Tom, GPS thing, so this may be a stupid question (but that never stopped me before).

I was thinking of buying one for an upcoming road trip. Is it possible to have one "link" up with a laptop? Would be kinda neat for my personal navigator (wifey) to be able to play with the laptop while linked to the GPS unit as opposed to holding such a small screen.
Any advise, words of wisdom, ect..ect..
Is it even possible?

Thanks in advance,  :thumb:

There should be all the information you need on this site

I have a Garmin and for me, I would not want to have to deal with a laptop.

Mine does have bluetooth and text to voice. It is rather handy to link it to my phone for handsfree calling and translation of texts to voice.

Bob,

I have a standalone (non-display) GPS unit (Garmin GPS18) that is specifically made for laptop use, as well as an external antenna.  I used it to navigate the intercoastal with nautical maps on boat trips with great success but it works pretty well on the road too.  I also have a Nuvi 780 and love it for everyday use.

A couple great suggestions, thanks Wayne and Tom.
Especially the link to another forum. That's what I need.....to belong to another "club".

Bob, if your laptop is anything like mine, you will prefer the display on the GPS. They make units with relatively large displays for reasonable prices these days.  My Garmin Nuvi has a 4.3" screen and is very easy to read.  Unless your wife has vision problems that require a large laptop screen, I'd suggest a standard 4.3" screen.

The GPS screens are made to be easy to view in direct sunlight, much better than any of my laptops and the touch screen functions are very easy to operate, versus a laptop which requires key strokes, etc.  My GPS is a couple years old and a basic model, but I had a chance to play with a friend's new, fancier model.  His had real-time traffic, and voice activation, etc.  It gives you an alternate route and lets you plug in an address without punching keys.  Much nicer and a much better screen than my 2 year old unit.  The new GPS's are really cool and very inexpensive.

You'll need to do research to see what works best for you but I was impressed with the model that had voice activation and real-time traffice.

Thanks again Wayne. I did start a thread over there. They're most helpful and I've learned quite a bit about this technology. I consider myself a high-tech kinda guy, but man.....it's hard to keep up nowadays.

Lots of cools toys regarding laptops and GPS. Much cheaper than I would have thought.
Haven't made any decisions yet, but soon we'll have checkbook in hand.

You could consider getting the 3G iPad and using the Google Maps app... 8)

I'd like one, but this is the little lady's new toy, not mine.
She wants a full fledged keyboard, I suppose she's "old school" in that respect.

We did get a 15" Gateway laptop and a Microsoft GPS recevier. I got the 60 day trial of Microsoft Street and Trips. If all goes well, we'll drive around this weekend checking out the stuff
