Apple announced yesterday that the 3G will be available next Friday, the 30th. Preorders prior to yesterday will be delivered on the same day. Yay!

I'm getting quite keen on the 3G iPad, although I've not seen one yet. Each day lately I spend a couple of hours outside with my laptop working on a few things. The reason it's a couple of hours is because that's all the battery life I have once I've plugged in the 3G modem. Almost all of my work and writing these days is done on the Web; the only thing I would miss with the iPad is my photo processing scripts and it might be possible to port those to the iPad anyway.

I'm just waiting to see what Australian prices are going to be for the 3G model and plans.

John,

Why couldn't we mail you one from the USA?  That may be a better deal.  No?

Hi Jason, i love your thinking here :D but it wouldn't work with the 3G since it has to be set up for a local carrier.

Now I'm curious.  How can one travel with one if it will not work abroad?  I thought that's what was so great (among many other things) is that you can take it anywhere and it will work.

No?   :(

It'll work overseas (just like the iPhone) but requires a local carrier to support it. Otherwise you'll have to register it here and buy an international data plan which can get quite pricey. Unless a local carrier has an ipad plan, it's not worth shipping it overseas.

Anyone (besides me) get their 3G iPad today? F@#$ing awesome! It's really versatile! Opted out of the poorly conceived dock keyboard and got the wireless. Let me tell you right now, my laptop will be staying home a lot more! The great thing about the iPad w/ wireless keyboard is you pretty much have a full functioning notebook computer at a fraction of the weight and size. Not to mention web browsing is a hundred times easier than with a netbook.

Pez -

If I get one it will be 3G...

Do you read a lot? Can you read pdf documents easily and take notes over them?
Can you take notes on any book? Cut and paste easily to other documents?
Did you get a case?
How much total for the keyboard?
What does the Vimeo.com site look like (trick question)

I'm not much of a reader, but I have been using it a lot to read online and it is a breeze. My wife took it from me for the last two hours and she was LOVING it for reading and pictures.

I use PDFs all the time for my new job and it's just as easy as a computer, in some ways better because of the instant ability to zoom in and out.

Taking notes is easy as well as a matter of fact I'm typing all of this from the iPad on my lap like a keyboard and it's pretty easy especially if you are decent at typing. About 80% of my normal typing speed! No sweat at all! I did buy the iPad apple case and it is ok. Nothing head turning, but it protects the iPad well and its great for using as a stand for propping up the ipad when using an external keyboard. I believe the keyboard is $70. I got one with my iMac and my wife wanted the wired 10 key so we had this one just lying around.

Copy cut paste all just as good as iphone or touch.

Yes, got mine yesterday as well. And yes, I'll probably have to get another because it seems the wife likes it much better than her netbook.

Quite a neat device.

I picked it up yesterday.  This is my first apple product.  On some levels, I am very impressed by how well things are put together, and in some respects, I am confused by how things work.  I can't figure out if it's because I'm stupid or because the programs are buggy.

Can you flag emails as important, etc?  How can you mark all emails as read?  Sometimes, single finger scrolling decides to stop working and i will need to two finger scroll - and it will randomly switch back and forth between these two types of interface on the same web page (google reader.)  I can't figure out how to view all books in the store.  It will only show me recent additions and maybe one random featured author.  It won't charge on any of my USB ports, I have to plug it into the wall.  I can't figure out how to pick and choose which photos to sync to the device, I am forced to choose every photo within the directory.

Etc.

But I really like the device overall.  It does just enough things right.

Can you flag emails as important, etc? no you can change folders but not flag. How can you mark all emails as read?  don't think you can do this either you will have to do so on your Mac or PC and mark as read that way. Sometimes, single finger scrolling decides to stop working and i will need to two finger scroll - and it will randomly switch back and forth between these two types of interface on the same web page (google reader.) Never had this issue, but try a reset on the unit. Hold the power button and home button down at the same time until the red power button appears and turn it off. If that doesn't work try reformatting the unit by plugging it into your computer. If you go this route let me know and i'll explain it in better detail. I can't figure out how to view all books in the store.  It will only show me recent them additions and maybe one random featured author. it seems fine to me. Are you clicking on the top left of the ibooks section on "store"? Sounds like you have so also try the "categories " button on the too left of the store page.  It won't charge on any of my USB ports, I have to plug it into the wall. I have the same problem. My 3 year old Mac book pro will not charge my iPad. There is something about certain USB ports that just don't carry enough juice. It also does not charge off of the iPod adter I have for my car nor does it work with my dock in my car to play music. Blah I can't figure out how to pick and choose which photos to sync to the device, I am forced to choose every photo within the directory. Mac or PC?

Hope this helps.
Jason

Edit: just saw the that you own a PC. Not sure honestly how to do that.

Thanks, Jason, that was helpful.  Too bad most of the answers were negative in nature.

I did a quick search on google reader, it seems that this is a known issue.  Between two finger scroll and single finger, it's still preferable, to me, over the mobile version of the utility.

Here's a walkthrough of my ibooks store experience:

1: tap Store on top left
2: In the title bar just under the time, it says "Featured"
3: There are two sections underneath: New and Notable and Popular Children's books under $8
4: I hit categories and the drop down menu appears
5: I scroll to Sci Fi and Fantasy and tap that
6: The two sections that appear are Recent Releases and Raymond E Feist.  These sections only contain recent releases and SOME Raymond E Feist books, respectively.  I can't seem to access any other authors.  There is a "see all" button next to each section, but they only reveal what is already visible in that section without navigating away from that page in the store.  Now, I know there are more authors because if I know their name, I could search for them and they would appear.

It's the same for music, now that I come to it.  I can only see so much jazz, and I can't explore all their artists.

I received mine on Saturday and have returned it today.
Mine had the wifi problem with the disconnect and request
for password problem.  I'm sure it will be fixed in a update but
no good for now.

I bought the wifi only model, 32 Gig.  Very cool device, I really like it.  I had major problems with the wifi but it turned out not to be fault of the iPad, just the source of internet I was using, motel.  I have tried the unit at several free wifi places such as restaurants and it works perfect every time. :D
