Counterfeit gear
« on: 6 Apr 2010, 07:46 pm »
Hello folks

Does anyone have any experience of being sold a counterfeit component, or anything audio, on Ebay or Audiogon ? I have not (that i know of), but i am wandering how bad of a problem this is.

I think it depends on the type of component. Hard to counterfeit an amp or a DAC or a turntable. Not as hard to counterfit a speaker, it can be done but it does take a lot of effort and is hardly worth it. Cables are prevalent and could theoretically be counterfitted if you can reproduce the label and get the case and terminations right. Tubes are where I think you will find the most suspect items.

Counterfeit cables are fairly evident. It's an easy target because most cable cos. use OEMs. Since almost anyone can start a cable co. w/ minimal investment, the counterfeiters take their cue from that.

I know symposium complained about counterfeit roller balls on their website somewhere. Their series 2 were being copied and sold as Symposium.

I find it to be thoroughly amusing. :)
