Sorry I missed those and making your acquaintance, Pano.  I'll remedy that next time.  Have I been misspelling Danny's name all this time.  End in EY or IE?  Thanks.

amandarae: Wow! great looking rig you've got there.  How do you like the 604s on the low baffle?

Jim. Never trust my spelling.  :P

Here is another photo of my rig this year.

It worked very well with the lovely Grant Audio A-534B, which is a SET using 300B output tubes.   Rated at 8WPC, I had about 1/2 that because of the 16 Ohm drivers.  But it was plenty, plenty.  I had a Virtue One on the 18" woofers.
Passive crossover for the 605, DCX2496 for the low end.

Great bass, really good soundstage.  One of the few speakers there with depth and height to the stage.

I'll be writing more about it soon, as well as John's big OBees.

For SS/Active XO:
Linkwitz Orion OB

Wow!  Any comparisons on the sound?

Thanks for showing,

Panomaniac, thanks!  Love the 8G's with the low baffle, and been playing it for years now.  Killer midrange and I find the bass to be enough for my liking (depends in the amp and preamp being use IMO).  Wish I can hear your speakers though...

Hello Dan,

Very difficult to compare the two as each have a different implementation to solve the same problem:  How does it sound to me?  he,he,

In a nutshell, nothing compares to the bass and speed of the Orions, midrange is big and wide too.  Exceptionally good to me especially when using digital sources and can hold its own in vinyl playback as well.  As for the SET set up, to me this type of rig is for times when you like to experience the SET soul and to borrow from Dr. Gizmo's quote;  What is the sound of a single 2A3 (300B) clapping?"  In other words, to me, no system that I heard of can compare to the emotion of what an SET/high sensitivity can give (except perhaps a SET/low power OTL which I cannot afford!).

In one of my Youtube vids, a person asked me the ff:  "if you had to have only one amp, one pair of speaker left, and one record player only... what would you not part away with? " and I just said thanks!

After experiencing/living with both of my system, I found it difficult to let go of either one.  Both however punched out my upgrade bug ticket, for a couple years now and counting.

Hey amandarae.  Thanks.  Yeah, the Altec does OK alone on that size baffle.  On a lot of music I could turn off the 18s and you'd never hear it.  But tracks with a good bass line, well...
Let's just say you'd miss the 18s.

Really, done right this is better than so many other systems.  Not spectacular, not brash, just musical.  Something to live with and enjoy. Like what a fullrange, one driver speaker wants to be when it grows up.  There is a lot to be said for that.

Panomaniac,

On the sides of your U frames, did you use a laminated pine handy panel from Lowes?

Yes, it is laminated pine.  You got it!

BTW, the baffles on these are really thick, almost 2 inches.

I have been eyeing some handy panels of laminated pine at Lowes.  Does the laminated pine have the ability to take a stain or finish?
Also do you think it be sturdy enough for a flexy table build, to use as the shelves?

Don't know about the table build.   I did stain some I had with a honey colored varnish/stain.  It did well.  Can't say for darker stuff.

These are pine handy boards from Lowes with 1/4 bamboo on the front.

Yes, those are enabl'd Hemp Acoustic FR8s at the top. The very 1st pair to receive the treatment - and by my own hand. Nice drivers once broken in.

On the bottom were Selenium 15".  Nice driver for OB.  Passive x-over but I don't remember the points.  Big inductor - maybe 13mH on the woofers.

That  was a rig I ran on Maui for a while.  I enjoyed it.  Think it had a rear firing tweeter for some time.  That was nice, too.

Thought so; that looks like your yard in Kihei.  Did I ever hear those?

Hey Poinz.  I don't remember.  Maybe. Mostly you heard the "Lounge Lizards" with the Altec 811 horns on top.
I was still learning about OB crossovers then.  Have a much better feel for them now.

Howzit on Maui these days?

If those Seleniums are the 15PW3's then how do they compare to your current eminence 18's?  I know 1 is passive and 1 is active, but still.

Hmmm.... good question - but hard to answer.  They were used in such different ways that it's hard to compare.  Different crossover points, different drivers on top, etc.

I do feel that the Selenium 15PW3 is a good OB driver and is often overlooked.  The mid Q of the Selenium means good bass response without getting boomy.  Efficiency is pretty good, too.
