Computer/Camera interface; can someone help me out?
« on: 17 Mar 2010, 12:52 pm »
I feel silly asking this question, but I'm hoping someone here can help me out.  I've got a dell laptop running windows XP and a Sony DSC-H20 camera.  I upload all my photos into Picasa or Windows photo viewer through the USB cable that came with the camera.

My problem is that all of my photos upload to my computer the normal way, but none of my videos get saved to the computer.  I've tried to update picasa and update windows, but it doesn't seem to help.  Is there some setting or something that I'm missing?

Any help would be great.

If you are recording in HD, you probably need to get a proprietary (Sony) FireWire cable to upload.  No, they never include this cable. (I know from mini DV HD cameras)   If you record in SD, you should be able to upload with USB cable.

Thanks for the suggestion.  The only thing is that if I have the camera hooked up to the computer via the included usb cable I can watch the videos on my computer on itunes; I just can't save them for some reason.  Any ideas what could be going on?

Have you tried copying the video files from your camera to your hard drive using Windows Explorer? Just treat them as any other file (drag and drop).

I still think you need to buy a special wire.

Just to view in HD, you normally use FireWire or HDMI cable.  USB 2.0 can't handle HD MPEG4 or whatever Sony uses for HD.  I am guessing that it's down scaling your video files to view on you PC with USB cable.  To save in HD, I bet you have to get that proprietary cable.

Try recording in SD and see if you can save it.  I bet you can.

You absolutely can use USB 2.0 for hi-def video. Besides, what I'm suggesting (drag and drop) is coping the file, not viewing it live.

Very good.

I was thinking viewing and capturing.   But I guess your camera has already done that. :duh:
