Has anyone used Jim Smith's audio system voicing techniques outlined in his book, "Get Better Sound"?

I am reading his book and would be interested in your lessons learned from using his ideas.

Thanks, JohnnyB

Hi - I have heard about the book but have not read it.  Maybe give us a couple of the more salient ideas from the book and we could comment?

Yes I lived too long to give credence to only one particular point of view.

...sounds like a worthwhile read.  It would be interesting to hear what he has to say about isolation techniques.  I've been reading about Isonodes from Bright Star and all the feedback.  So, for a few $$'s I ordered 2 sets and put one under my Arcam 36.  I was surprised by the change.  There was a noticeable improvement in sound stage, detail and bass.  Well worth the $$'s in the Arcam case.  There was some improvement in the BCD-1 but not much.

S'alright Robin. I'm also a SS amp guy (but I do have tubes in front of it).

Nothing inherantly wrong with either approach.  I've always thought how the technology is implimented is more important than what technology is used.

There are excellent tube amps and bad one.  There are excellent solid state amps and bad one.  Class A, A/B, D, and on and on.  I've heard great and terrible of just about everything.

A few of Jim Smith's recommendations/ideas follow:

1.  He has a detailed procedure to voice the stereo system using the Chieftain's Tears of Stone CD, stating that at specific sections of songs, this is what you should hear.  Then he outlines how to fix your system.

2.  He stresses getting the system oriented focusing on the 20-300Hz bands, as this is the area that has the most room problems.

3.  Not a big proponent of spending money on 'optional equipment' and expensive stuff until I get the basics solved.

4.  Does not like 2.1 systems, as it is very difficult to integrate the Subs with the L/R speakers.

etc, etc, etc.

A good read.  I'll keep you updated as I continue applying his principles.

Me too - i have also heard bad vinyl and bad turnables and bad cd players and bad cd's - the grass is always greener in the latest technology or  someone else's system.
