Food community

Hey...hope this shameless plug is ok...if not, please feel free to dispose of it...

...I've been working on developing a niche social media web site focused on healthy and sustainable eating.  Hope all of you food enthusiasts will check it out and join:

http://www.foodielink.com

It's in a beta right now, and we're adding stuff to it every week.  Basically it combines functionality from sites like Flickr (photo sharing), Digg (news sharing), Twitter (micro-blog updates), and Blogger (blogging), and will soon be adding things to help people find local food-related events and offers (mostly in NYC to start).

Hope you like it!

Looks like a nice fun site, Phil. As far as I can tell it has a function whereby discussions are linked to groups that people join, a function that wasn't very well received recently here. Perhaps it's just one of those things that have to be there from the beginning - in any case, I would be interested to hear/see how you go with it.

Thanks John...and yeah, we had a big debate about whether or not to do the Groups thing vs. a traditional discussion forum. The designer and programmer I'm working with on it (both of them in their mid-20s) kept calling me a dinosaur for pushing for the traditional discussion forum...so we will see how it works out

I think the fundamental difference, and the difference that allows large sites to get large, and keeps small (ish) sites small, is the locus of control. People who are used to centralized control much prefer it, even if they make no contribution to the work required to maintain it, and/or constantly complain about it. It's scary to them that someone else might do something they don't like, and they have no recourse to "correct" it, so they do their utmost to keep a centralized model and then do whatever it takes to influence it in their favor.

I think your designer and programmer are on the right track.

JohnR...you are definitely correct about the control thing.  On FoodieLink, we've basically opened the whole site up to user-generated content, so the notion of letting it bloom organically is definitely not for the faint-of-heart.  We use the term "Intestinal Fortitude".  We're really hoping to build an initial community of people who care about the subject-matter and can keep things moving in the right direction.  If it means anything to you, I continually use AudioCircle as an example to my team whenever we get into talking about what we should be doing.

Rollo...thanks for joining! :thumb:  Hope to see you active on the site!
