Here they are...the re-boxed Klipsch Cornwalls

...this is sort of a caricature of a speaker.

10 cubic foot enclosures

So about a week ago I'm over at Albert's place. We walk into to his small demo room and he's mumbling something about this pair of speakers that he isn't sure who he's going to pawn these off on and he turns one of them around. I immediately see the tweeter and we both say at the same time 'these are Klipsch'. You guys know Albert, so he goes on about one thing or another and eventually says these are Cornwalls that got sent to Texas to get re-boxed. Some guy down there was doing this during the 70's and 80's. Taking Cornwalls, gutting them, doing a crossover mod and building a new, heavier, better reinforced box.
After a while I ask Albert to hook them up so I can give them a listen. He hooks them up to his Vincent SS amp and tubed pre. Needless to say when you cranked it, you had to duck and cover. Eventually I asked him how much he had to have for them and he told me and followed up with 'I dunno who's gunna take these big bastards' (full well knowing
who was going to buy them). So we finally worked out an even up swap, the re-boxed Cornwalls for my Vandersteen 2Ci. Win-win in my book (sorry Bill,
had to make that trade).
We lugged them down into the Redrum a couple of nights ago and I hooked them up to my bone-stock HH Scott 299 from 1962. WHOLLY CRAP are these things fun! They smoothed right out. They don't have the balls they did with solid state but boy are these fun to listen to. The Cornwalls and the HH Scott go together like peas and carrots. With the puny 18 watts the Scott puts out, it quickly becomes insanely loud in the Redrum....and talk about bass.
If ever I get my act together I'll start inviting smaller groups over if you want to hear the iFi Chair and the Cornies.
I think I might just have the new Big Fun System
