ancient hippy-the Mav with the stock tube sounded fine to me--it's like I'd say "average" the other tubes I had to try were better sounding,
fuller(cbs-tube),other one was DOA, but I really only used the Mav. for a few days and I'm very inexperienced. Mariusz, etcarroll and ltr317
have a better perspective I think. Thanks guys

Ed - Okay, to answer your first question: It is part of the construction of any type of tube. The primary purpose of a getter is to burn off any air remaining inside the tube missed by the vacuum pump at the factory. The full and correct name is a vacuum tube. So there should be no air whatsoever inside the tube, otherwise there will be a white coating indicating the tube is dead. Even if the factory pump gets all the air out, sometimes the tube may develop tiny leaks (especially through the electrical connections on the bottom of the tube). In these cases, the getter will burn off the tiny bits of air or gas and the interaction is call "getter flash." When this happens, there will be coloration near the top of the tube from the getter flash process. So the coloring is an indication that the tube has good vacuum. There are getter designs which I won't get into, but the getter is the metal rod extending to a metal shape (round, square, disk, etc.) near the top of the tube.

To answer the second question: the 6n3 is the russian and chinese tube coding name for that type of tube. In the past before the russians and chinese become the main tube makers, the U.S. and Europe had their own separate coding. That's why you can use either a 396a, 2c51, 5670 or 6n3 as they are essentially the same tube. Sometimes, a different number tube may have slightly different operating requirements, but for the most part the same family of tubes are interchangeable. In the past, the U.S. for the most part designated the first number or numbers for the voltage. For instance, a 6DJ8 is a six volt tube and a 12AX7 is a twelve volt tube. I could go on, but I don't want to put everyone to sleep.

Yep..it was a total impulse buy, I saw the shipped price, had just gotten some cash and jumped on it. If I screwed you guys up on the
group buy..I apologize, I really thought nobody was into it. It wasn't until I contacted Paul about some tubes that I found out it was still alive.

Can't wait to see impressions of the new amp coming out

I'll chime in that the USB controller sucks, without the driver it is stuck at 16-bit 48khz. With the driver it still seems to do strange things(possibly the same as before) even with WASAPI enabled. This forces coloration of the music through software resampling either by the media player or windows itself. The difference is noticeable enough to bother me.

I personally use the spdif out of an Auzentech Prelude(Bit-Matched transport 1:1 source sample rate output).

I currently use the headphone amp which people say is not the greatest asset of the mav though hundreds of times better than what I had before so I can't complain nor do I know what better is. I wonder how much better this one will be as a headphone amp though.

The Mav was the best purchase I have made this year, was a large step above even the dac on my prelude. I never owned a good amp, and this one was able to power my DT770/Pro 250.

Hey Ed - I never saw you post any reason for buying the Grant Fidelity vs. the Mav 1. Was it just a matter of price?

The price was right, I hit them on a sale day...after I bought it I thought of a lot of reasons why!! LOL!!! It is apparently the same DAC just configured a bit differently. The volume pot is only applicable to headphone output as shipped...it can be jumpered to use as pre-amp if I so desire later on...I'm enjoying it...haven't slipped in the Raytheon Tube yet, currently using the GE as it really sounds good with the new Virtue piece I got/am trying.
