I am interested in hearing about listening comparisons between the Zhalou vs. Maverick vs. Eastern Electric - please share with your fellow AC'ers.

NB

Hi there,

I have been following this thread from beginning to the end.  The positive comments generated from the tour really stirred up my interest.  Before  I heard of the Maverick, I was thinking about the  Matrix mini-i which also have received some favourable comments.  I know, there is a price difference of about 150$.  But the Matrix  does provide more => two power supplies (one of analog, one for digital section), two DACs operate in true balance configuration, a digital volume control (this may actually rule against it), XLR connections.  Just curious does anyone on this board had compare the sound of the Maverick and the Matrix mini-i

I doubt it lo_tse
But I have been wrong before.

Personally, my one and only point of reference will be Red Wine Audio HPA DAC and maybe USB DAC in my Aura Note integrated.

It sure would be fun to compare notes.

I have no use for ballanced design and to be honest, tube rolling is kind of sexy.
Unable to swap op amps is also a shortcoming but if it sounds good and someone has all ballanced setup,..........maybe???

Anyone notice anything about the sound after an extended listening session? Like a 3-5 hour session? This is via the tube output...

Actually, it is $190 per unit + Free Air shipping (5 units to same address)
If you still think that this is a whole lot then Cheap & Cheerful hifi might be to extravagance for you my friend.

Saving is not huge but when you consider the build quality, shipping cost from Asia and list price to begin with then it is not too bad.

Cheers
Mariusz :)

Edit : Mjosef is right - it comes to $189 per unit shipped.

Been lurking this thread for quite sometime now. Thread has been open in my browser for more than 3 weeks just so i can refresh and see what's new.  If the plans for the group buy pushes through, I'm interested.

The other dac I'm looking at is the VALAB ($200 approx), lots of reviews on head-fi. Problem is, no pre-amp section. Since my plan down the road would be to upgrade my current Qinpu A6000 to the class D amps, the Mav hits the sweet spot for me.

Not sure if the group buy has taken place already, but if it hasn't, i'm highly interested.

Again, thanks to shadowlight for the opportunity last time to hear out the class D amps.

I will have to try and retest that impression...been a couple days back on my regular DAC. Seems like no one else experienced anything unusual.
Before I removed the Maverick I listened to the SS output...sounded very good to me, in some ways better than the Tube output. YMWV.

Are you sure those are not voices in your head?

But seriously, can you be more specific?

Curious to hear your observation.

I've never listen to it for more then 2h at the time tho and my longest badroom session is a bit less then that so I should be fine.

Could very well be squatters in my brain.

Didn't want to specify, could prejudice other people expectations. Will report back if the same thing pops up.

So,
-3-4 hours of play time
-tube output

was it in preamp/volume-on or bypass-dac only mode?

Order submitted, waiting for confirmation.  Hopefully it will ship out today, since it was ordered before 6pm CT time.

I have a pair of 4562s extracted from a previous DAC, in darn good condition (I suppose).  If anyone needs them, $6 for the pair, tho it's late that you've ordered.....  Somebody else may need them?

Back from hiking in the west.  Where the Maverick?

That is what happens when you live in Amish country and do not use technology to guide you :).  I shipped the DAC and you should get it tomorrow, provided FedEx finds your house.

Enjoy.

What??? I had a sextant, just not a star to use as a guide.

Doubt I'll touch the OpAmps, but will cycle through the tubes. Also swap my Acurus amp and Pumpinman's classD amp in and out.

Maverick was last spotted in Fargo, North Dakota...the Lagoon Saloon...the table, #5...the game, black Jack, all or nothing at all.  :eyebrows:
