Maverick Audio DAC tour

Would you guys consider this DAC to be a good choice for someone just starting out in this hobby or are there better choices in your opinion around this price point??

For someone starting out in this hobby I don't think you could go wrong with this unit - particularly at it's price point. I just don't think there are very many dac/pre combos out there for $200.00 and If and when you decide to upgrade you can always relegate it to a second system. I just picked up a toslink yesterday (it only took 3 days

) and I would like to listen a little longer before posting any impressions. There is one thing I would like to mention: I don't think it's possible to bypass the Maverick's pre section while listening with the usb, unless of course I'm doing something wrong which wouldn't shock me. Perhaps someone else who has listened could chime in

I agree. A Maverick D1 and a MiniWatt or a T-amp from Trends, Virtue, Sonic Impact, etc. would be a wonderful way to start out in the hobby. Not following speakers that much these days, but DIY cabinets or an open baffle design for full range drivers (Wild Burro, Audio Nirvana, or Fostex, etc) gets you great sound for little money.

A little OT, yes. But thought that idea should be put out there somewhere.

I just talk to Ken and we both agree that it would make a perfect addition for 2nd system, desktop or excellent starter piece.
Considering that it is sort of a toolbox full of little
tricks at great value just makes it cheerful find.

Talked to Paul this AM. He was wondering who'd be next. He thought there's no more NYC area waitlister, other than me, and I can't take it until after April 6. So, Ken should contact Paul then???????

Thanks, question answered, everything I've read so far from you guys about this DAC points squarely at a great jumping off point for me. I'd could experiment with different tubes etc. and start hearing what you guys are talking about.

Hey I wouldn't mind auditioning it in my system, until The Shek returns...

In Paul's system I thought the EE edged out the Maverick, mainly in the overall tonal balance, that harmonious balance between the bass, midrange and treble, that is sorely my preference which will differ from others. In another system it might just be the other way around.
Plus at times different ICs was used in the comparison...sooo..???

I do not see why not. Sure, take it for a spin. It sure could use a bit more burn-in. Just do me a favor,........make the arrangements with Paul for pick up and then work with Shek when he comes back.

Whatever, thanks. I still have some of Paul's 12AU7s for ransom, until I come back. So, may be it's good if the DAC stays with him, and we'll make a swap when I come back. I owe him, so likely we'll meet up in Chinatown, over coffee.....

If someone gets it before I do, fine also. I'll find out, and go about accordingly then.
