This phono stage is from my personal collection and is one of the few pieces that I have held onto for a long time. Since I am now in the audio business I have to have room for the products that I carry. I do not carry Conrad-Johnson.
The EF-1 is a classic Conrad-Johnson FET design that is suitable for both higher output MC cartridges and all MM cartridges. Depending upon the relative gain of your preamp you may be able to use a fairly low output MC as well.
The gain and loading is set by the use of DIP switches inside the unit. You access these by removing the top cover with a Phillips screwdriver. The gain settings are 40db, 46db, and 52db. The loading choices are 47k Ohms, 9.6k Ohms, 1.9k Ohms, 500 Ohms, and 200 Ohms. As you can see, there are ample choices to work in most any hi-fi system.
The EF-1 is in nearly new condition and comes with the original packaging, like new owners manual, and the advertising brochures that came with it originally. It has been very well cared for and has been very carefully used.
The sound is classic C-J: very smooth yet detailed. I personally think that the performance is equal to just about anything on the market under $2500.00 currently.
