Yeah, a lot of people swear by the PS1, even claiming the built in DAC is pretty good. I'll bet there's a bunch of mod stuff out there by now, like better power supplies, etc.
I feed my Stan Warren modded DAC optically from a cheap Samsung DVD (not even sure of the model) when watching concert vids and the sound is more than acceptable. I'm pretty sure the Sammy was around $100. It replaced a more expensive Sony unit that died after only a few years.
I might try an OPPO at some point and see if it matters.
