AV123 Speakers?
« on: 6 Feb 2010, 09:57 am »
Don't know much about AV123 products, especially their monitors.  As far as listening experience, quality etc how do they stock up or compare?  I would love to get me a pair of ACI but they far beyond my cheap and cheerful price range.

Thanks!

Which line of AV123 speakers are you looking for info on performance?

I am very happy with my X-LS and X-CS speakers.  GR-Research did the design and crossovers for the entire X series.

I'd go for the Tweak City Audio WAF-1s over the ELT525M, personally.  The ELT is voiced a bit 'warmer' sounding whereas the WAF-1s are neutral/flat in FR.  Depends on what type of sound you're looking for....at the price they both come in at, fantastic speakers.

The ELT525Ms are nice little monitors with a great finish. I owned two pairs of them for desktop setups, but I sold one pair to try the WAF-1 speakers, and IMO the TCA WAF-1 is more superior to the ELT525Ms. The ELTs do sound very good, but I didn't notice their "stuffiness" until I got the WAF-1 speakers. Dialogue and vocals are THAT much clearer.

At MSRP, I would definitely get the WAF-1 ($299 ELT525M, $229 WAF-1). On their sale prices, the ELT525M (typically $175) becomes more enticing, depending how much you want to pay.

They both do, I believe.

Their woofers are very nice for the price.  Metal cone woofers are actually inferior in many ways...they each have tradeoffs.  Durability is not so much an issue like it was years ago.

Yup, both speakers have treated paper cone woofers. cujobob is right though, that these aren't like older speakers and don't deteriorate as fast like they used to (significantly less, I think!).

If you want a speaker with aluminum woofers at a good price, the Energy RC-10 for $279 shipped at Vanns is a good option, and definitely a step up from the WAF-1 and the ELT525M.

I think Energy is discontinuing these, so if you want, get them while you can!

Another recommendation - if you are near any sellers, check out the Infinity Beta 20 speaker. Use Craiglook to see where people have it listed across the USA. Some guy in MD has them for $50 a pair, which is DIRT CHEAP. The Beta series use the same tweeter as the Revel Concerta series, and are pretty much indiscernible in sound - the enclosure just doesn't look as nice.
