Does Toyota care more about Europeans than Americans?

So Toyota has agreed to pay their fine. Will Goldman-Sachs be so gracious?

Bob,

Find a way to get a job with Toyota. They will come roaring back with a vengeance. G.M. doesn't have many lives left. You don't want to be left high and dry clinging to the days of glory that only a few old timers can still recall. Oops! There's that word again.

Paul, no Photoshop from me. I ran across it on the internet, thought I'd pass it along.

Macro, the Volvo/Saab dealer I work for (formerly Ford and GM) is now Dutch and Chinese....for better or worse.
I'll still buy GM though.  :eyebrows:

Going down with the ship, no matter what flag it is flying. Got to admire the loyalty even as I wonder about your judgement.
As for Toyota, I've heard they are still profitable, amazingly enough. People I've talked to around Colorado feel like the whole thing has been overblown by the press. Could be true but what I like is the fact that they haven't believed everything that they are told to believe. For once.

I've owned nothing but GM vehicles (all assembled in the Americas) since 1989. Before that was a Dodge and an AMC.
In that time since 1989, I've not had to spend more than $100 on repairs/breakdown (excluding maintenance/tires/tune-ups) until this last year. That's a pretty good track record in my opinion. Despite the fact that GM is now flying a government flag right now, I'll keep my hopes up they'll get back to being self supported. Afterall, I've needed help myself a time or two in my lifetime. In their 100+ year existence, this is the first time they've asked for help. My track recored isn't that clean.  No, they're not without fault, and not everything they build is perfect, but no manufacturer can make that claim.

Bottom line, I'll stick with the one that's been good to me for over 20 years.

Bob,

I'll donate $10 towards your first Toyota.  If I knew how to build a website, I'd petition Toyota owners all over the world to pitch in $10 too.  If somebody could help out with building such a website...

Ok I'll admit, I wanted an MR2 for awhile. But then realized they don't like four by eight sheets of plywood.
I've also done quite a bit of tinkering on a former supervisors 1969(?) Land Cruiser. That was neat.

That's about as far as I'll go.

Bob - Try a Prius.
The Prius is much more car than most people seem to realize. I never intended to buy one but a "what the hell" acceptance of an offer to drive one lit me up. It is roomy, luxurious, well-equipped, comfortable, high-tech, safe and economical. Won't carry full sheets of plywood but you can keep an old Chevy pickup around for the few times you need to do that. Meanwhile your Prius will get you to those family outings for 65% less gas. Resale is very high. Insurance is cheap. Reliability, despite recent news stories, is very high.

I don't know why this is but my insurance on the Prius from State Farm costs me only $221 every six months for full coverage.

All in all, it seems to be an incredible bargain.

By the way, people out here in the Colorado High Country report excellent winter travel capability in the Prius. I know of two individuals who say it outperforms their Volvo XC in the snow. Maybe that is because of front wheel drive, good weight distribution and skinny tires, but I'm guessing about that.

Personally, I can't see buying a Prius.  The batteries will fail, and that's a huge expense.  Moreover, there are now diesels that have finally made it here from Europe.  These get about as good gas mileage as a Prius (in real life, that is), yet actually have power to pass people and enter freeways.  And the engines are known for lasting basically forever.

Here's what I was able to find out about Prius battery failure.

http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/hybrid-batteries-none-the-worse-for-wear-cga.htm

As for highway ramps, I can say that having the power to reach the 75 mph speed limit on I-70 out here in Colorado is no problem whatsoever.
Addressing your concern about passing ability is more difficult because I own 4 cylinder gas cars besides the Prius. It does as well at passing as any of them, better than some, but how it compares to your standard of acceleration is something I can't know. I don't expect my Prius to perform like a V-8 so it doesn't disappoint me in that regard.
All of the materials I've ever seen indicate that Toyotas in general are far less likely to require "expensive repair" than European alternatives. VW diesels are pretty common out here and they receive mixed reviews in the area of reliability.
I really wanted to buy an Audi or VW diesel wagon but the resale on them is abysmal so I took that as a sign that they were costly to fix as they age. I bought a Matrix instead. Then the Prius came along and I handed the Matrix down to my younger son. It's really designed for a guy like him anyway. Lot's of ways to integrate with his hand held gizmos, and passenger/cargo options galore. Good mpg too, just north of 30.
