BTW, I am not Toyota bashing. I had a Camry for years and LOVED it, but how would you like to be handling marketing for this company now. YIKES!

On another note, Toyota realized a whopping 25% increase in sales last month over the previous year.

Meanwhile GM is closing 35% of it's Canadian dealerships.

I guess that's why they say:

Toyota - Once you drive one, you'll never stop.

I feel bad all of these people are making up lies about Toyota quality. Some are even crashing "repaired" Prius cars into police cars at high speeds, just to give Toyota a bad name. Even Consumer Reports seems to be in on the conspiracy. It's not fair!

I had a Camery while going to college. Loved it!

What are the technical details of the sticking gas pedal?

It is a:

1] Sticky butterfly valve
2] Bad throttle cable
3] Bad idle air speed motor
4] Electronics glitch/programming glitch
5] Defective throttle potimeter
6] Non of the above.

Mr. Shade,
To the best of my understanding, it's the accelerator pedal mechanism itself. Not sure if it's the sensor on the pedal that detects the angle of the pedal, or the mechanical linkage itself.
I wouldn't be arrogant enough to say for sure as I don't know, but neither does Toyota, but they're concentrating pretty hard on that area.

On different vehicles, I had similar issues.

One had a defective idle air speed motor, another a defective throttle body (sticking valve) and the third the pedal would stick if pressed down too far. That was something mechanical regarding a moving joint.

This problem is interesting to me since I do most of my own automotive repairs. It sounds like an intermittent problem (most difficult to find) and they have to find the conditions which will make it stand out most often. Has anybody on AC had this problem?

Yip. Any vehicle that uses sensors to detect the angle of your right foot, a computer to calculate, and motors to move the plate on the throttle body assembly has the potential to do this.

Similar, but different...Over the years I've had a dozen or so customer complaints of their accelerator pedal not reacting. Which means when you're sitting on a side street waiting for traffic to clear to dart across the road, you manage nothing more than to slowly roll into the first lane of traffic.

Thanks, Bob. I especially needed that tip on lane selection.

All kidding aside, I've been surprised so far by the pep this thing has. It's no dragster but it can get up to merging speed plenty fast enough. And it really does have an on/off button just like your amp or your computer. It's an engineering marvel. They've even made it impossible to lock your keys in the car.

I would say that the greatest danger I see in a Prius is all of the distraction available on board. There are a lot of gizmos to take your attention away from where it should be. This may be true of other modern cars as well, though. The Prius is only the second car I've bought that was made in this century.

Mine is a 2006 so I don't think it has recall issues and, since I bought it from a dealer, those should have been addressed anyway.
