SongTower placement
« on: 2 Feb 2010, 04:59 pm »
Hello all,

My SongTower's look to be ready by sometime next week.

Was wondering on what are the recommended placement of the SongTowers?

Also, from what I remember when I was able to hear them in a demo, the tweeters were on the inside, is this the correct set up that is recommended for these speakers?  Or is there no real difference?  Seeing photos online, it seems that most have them on the inside, where some do have their placement on the outside.

Tweeters go on the inside for sure.  As for proper placement, I suppose it is all about your room and what you can get away with.  If memory serves, Jim recommends 18 inches away from a back wall, 2 feet or so from side walls and the speakers spread 8 to 12 feet apart.  Unfortunately, my room doesn't quite allow for that kind of distance from the back wall so I went with 12" and the sound is still great.  Also have about a 9 foot spread between them, but I have seen many pictures here on the Circle where folks seem to have them spread a lot less than that.

Definitely don't be afraid to play with toe in.  Jim recommends enough to so that the speakers output crosses just behind your listening position.

Be prepared to have a smile from ear to ear as you listen to them.

Actually, I believe he might recommend placing them straight forward (or close to it) for most applications.
I initially had mine like you describe but got a broader soundstage with them facing straight ahead. Doing this didn't seem to have any adverse effects on imagery, in fact I think it helps them dissappear a little better.

There really aren't any rules on any of this.  Somehow it seems to make more sense to put the tweeters closest to each other, but I don't know why.  It really depends on whether the off-axis response is smoother toward the wide side of the baffle, or the narrow.  And I can't recall that there's much difference.  I don't use any toe-in for the dome version.  The little tweet's dispersion is so broad that it really doesn't make much difference at a normal listening distance.  But feel free to experiment.  The ribbon might profit from a little toe-in, but it's all in the actual listening, not the theory.  If you can pull them out a couple of feet, I would.

In my system it does.  The axis of the tweeters cross a few feet behind my head.  I still get a large sound stage but the imaging is improved.

Same here. My HT2-TL's are setup ala the Audio Physic method: on the long wall with the listening seat up against the wall, speakers almost out into the middle of the room, speakers about 8 feet apart and almost 4 feet from the sidewalls, and toed in so that the axis crosses behind my head.

Wide sound stage, pin-point focusing, and on most decent recordings a disappearing act.

Whew, for a minute there I was beginning to think I might be the only Songtower owner out there that had toe in.........

I have some STRTs and I don't see how toe in isn't important if you want precise imaging.  I have mine toed in to be facing about a foot from each side of my listening position (so their cross would be behind me).  Just sliding back and forth on the couch, I can hear the differences.  Soundstage is big no matter where I sit on the couch but as I scooch around the couch it messes up my imaging.  Not that imaging disappears as I go off center, but I can definitely tell it isn't perfect.

I have not tried them straight ahead.  Maybe this would cause more listening points to be MORE acceptable.  But in the end, 99% of the time it is just me listening in the sweet spot so why not maximize it for that.

I found that toeing my speakers in caused the instruments/voices to be bigger and reduced the amount of space between the instruments/voices.  Maybe room size/distance from speakers is a factor.
