No IR port on either product.

Now going back to the iPad I'm in no way saying it isn't a cool piece of kit I would love to own one, however I feel that it could have been so much more.

Is there an app out there such that the IPad (or Iphone/Itouch for that matter) can learn infrared remote codes and then transmit?  If this thing could learn to control the volume and input selection on my amp...... :eyebrows:!

Thanks for any info.

there are actually 2 products that I know of which will do just that.
One costs around $30 and the 2nd $50. It is a small attachment (transmiter) and free app that should work with 90% of what is out there. It can also learn new codes of less known brands. I  getting one myself. It should be out in Feb. and March. The cheaper one looks better and works through walls.
( sorry no links - iPhone typed ;) )

P.S

love the iPad. Nothing like it - whatever is said. Bonus - Mac reputation, value, reliability.  Case close.

Awesome; please fill us in with details/links when you get a chance.  A quick google search didn't immediately locate them.

Thanks!

Perhaps, but it's inexpensive by Apple standards

I'll (unless someone beats me to it)
Cool thing about it:
- nice, clean interface
- macros
- easy setup
- flexibility
- price is not bad given a total control of your system and Mac (if used as the source)

Today I sit in my listening chair with my 1st generation iPhone (this old phone performs remote app duties) using it to manipulate iTunes on my Mac Mini.  Now I don't need to get up to surf the internet.  I will own one of these little gems asap!

I am an Apple devotee and have used/owned their products since 1982 (Apple IIe). I have learned, over time, to not get the first generation of their new products because they usually dramatically improve things by the second generation of the product (e.g. iPhone, Macbook Pro).

:duh: If only I could learn this with stereo equipment.

This new tablet is very cool and will be an awesome remote for iTunes, amongst other things.

As a Mac fan, all I can say is, "Wow, yet another disappointment." The iPad is nothing more than an overgrown iPod Touch w/ a 3G option.

All they had to do is make it thick (tall) enough to house USB ports, and use a pruned OS X install, and it would rock.

Oh, wait. That would make it a replacement for the Newton, which Job-o has sworn he will never do.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

The difference for me with the iPhone are the software updates.  My iPhone was my first Apple product, now I own a Mac Mini and an Aiport Express.  I am excited about the iPad but I will hold off judgement until I hold it in my hands.

The iPad is the first computer for people who are completely computer illiterate — and there’s millions of them.

At a guess, the 3G option will probably be effectively killed in Australia by the telcos who won't let you bundle plans for different devices. Having to pay for three separate 3G plans (iPhone, iPad, and macBook) even from the same carrier would really be too much.

My thoughts exactly.  And that 'touch' keyboard, what a joke.

is it more absorbent than the leading brand?

if its not its a pretty useless product.
I think the iphone is great, but this product has no point, it really does not do anything my phone cant do, and its too big to be so useless.

If it had an oled screen, a stylus and an sd slot it would make a great photo editing tool.

It's official. Now that I've slept on it I'm underwhelmed. I don't see this as a revolutionary device whatsoever in its current iteration.

In my mind, it's not really a computer if it can't multitask.  It's really a toy.

Apple's feeble/own attempt at cornering the Ebooks market and also another MM platform to make goodies purchased from their stores...and to defeat your resistance to purchasing another electronic device that functions as other products already available, add their features into it.  Nothing original except the fact that it has different device functions bundled in a sleek thin package.

It might convince some who do not have some of these products into question into buying it.  Nevertheless, that 3G function, I predict will be a flop...3G networks are still not ready to deliver high quality access to anything, in the US.

What a ho hum attempt at revolutionizing something, for me, a big disappointment.

I am agreeing with the no multitaskee no buyee position.
I was holding out on the touch before the latest itineration because I wanted a camera.  Why is Apple putting out these hobbled devices.   :duh:
