A Couple of OB-5 Questions
« on: 9 Jan 2010, 11:35 pm »
I just bought a pair of OB-5's from "snegrah" (great guy by the way).  I'm going to be refinishing them from their current satin black finish, but I did have a couple of questions:

1)  For the wires connecting to the tweeter and two upper drivers:  When the wires enter the bottom enclosure, does the wire opening need to be sealed?  Note that the OB-5's are rear ported, unlike the sealed OB-7's.

2)  I know Danny recommends a minimum distance of 3-feet from the rear wall.  Is that 3-feet measured to the rearmost point of the speaker, or the front baffle?

Thanks for any help.  If I do a good job refinishing, I'll be sure to post some pictures.  If I suck...

It is from the rear as that is where the port is

The back of the OB section needs to be at least 3' from the front wall, 4'-5' is better.  If you can make this distance the port should be far enough from the front wall.  Not certain what Danny has recommended for the port to wall distance on the OB5 but on the N3s I believe I recall him stating a mimimum of a foot.

Best,

Thanks for the replies guys.  I can get the rear of the front baffle easily 3-feet from the front wall, but there's no way I can get the rear port 3-feet from it.  Hopefully, Danny can jump in to clarify where that 3-feet is measured to.

Any idea about sealing the wires?  The speakers sound great btw.

It sounds like you will need to pull the out as far as you can and treat the rear wall a little if needed.

Silicon will seal those wire holes for you.
