Speaker placement with Loreleis'
« on: 9 Jan 2010, 03:13 pm »
Would like some input about placement and/or bass management
strategies...eg:  tube traps...etc.
My room is 24'x14'x8' and the speakers are out about 44" from the
rear wall, 36" from the side wall, 8' apart and 10' from the primary
listening point.  Imaging and soundstage are great, but I have a
bass mode in my room that really boosts these speakers below about
60hz.  The strange thing is that the Tyler Linbrooks I had previously
and that had a front port vs. the rear port of the Lorelei were a bit
weak in the bass.

So...where to start.  I'm running tubes right now...by Audio Research
so I know that some solid state amplification might help some, but I
don't think that will stop the way the speakers are reacting to the room.
So...placement tips....stand recommendations...where to start with
room treatment?  I don't want to just  start throwing money at it
until I find what works.
thx,
Hibuck...

Just a thought but you might get more ideas if you had posting this thread in the Acoustic Circle. This is a common problem for the Lorelei's, that the bass is too overbearing. I'm taking for granted here that you have the Lorelei's on the 14" wall. With a 24' room, I would definitely pull them out into the room before trying anything else. In my 17' room, my Lorelei's are about as far out as yours are now. 48" to 72" would be the range I'd work with. 10' away from the Lorelei's is 3' more than myself, I use a 7' triangle. Maybe you could try an 8' triangle by just pulling the speakers out 2' more? Just some thoughts here. Definitely room treatment for the wall corners should be thought about also, either thick wall panels or tube columms that cover the front wall corners, top to bottom. The Acoustic Circle would have better advise in this area tho.

I really don't think SS is the answer either all though you really don't know for sure til you try a SS amp. Definitely start with pulling them loudspeakers out more,,, it's the cheapest thing you can do.    :thumb:

Try pushing your seating back to just under 15' from front wall to your ears and pull the speakers out another foot or so.  That will give you a little less boundary gain from the speakers and get you in a theoretically better place to listen out of the main modal issues.

I'm going to experiment...but here's something I tried this morning that helped somewhat and yet seemed counter-intuitive:  After seeing some pictures of rooms with the Lorelei's, they seemed to be closer to the back wall than I had mine.  Soooo...I tried two things:  First, I put foam in the ports...bad idea, all the bass went away.  Secondly, I moved them a foot closer to the back wall, reasoning that perhaps I was exciting a room mode where I had them first.  Big improvement!  I toed them in more, which brought more clarity to the midrange and moving them back still boosted the bass, but at a much lower frequency...as you might expect from the rear port.  Now, they thump a bit on the foot sounds on Eric Clapton Unplugged, but the bass guitar frequencies, with the exception of the open 'E' sound great.   More to come.
thanks!

I'm glad to hear you're making positive progress.  :thumb:  Keep experimenting and hopefully you'll find your "happy place" for little or no cost.  :D

Now experimenting with toe-in.  Having a problem with the midrange
being a bit forward in upper end and recessed in the lower.  I had
them pointed right at the seating position. Having them oriented straight
ahead smoothed out the response, but also changed the overall sound.

My hi-fi lament is that I'm at a point where each little change impacts
everything.  I can hear into the recording far better now and that's a
mixed blessing.  Some of the "less than optimal" recordings aren't as easy
to listen to as they were.  Better be careful...early signs of audiophilia nervosa   :duh:

In my 17' long room, I sit a little over 7' back and my Lorelei's are seperated 7' apart. I have my Lorelei's coming together about 6' behind me. IOW, it's minimal toe-in and they are not pointed directly at the sides of my ears. This offers me a solid image and an expansive sound stage. YMMV.

Hey Satfrat..

Just wanted to wish you good luck on Sunday.
I'm a Vikings fan...it will depend on which team
is "on" that day.

You can also try placing some plants behind the speakers...I am only able to have the Loreleis about 43" from the front wall but putting some (Fake) decorative plants and stalks behind the speakers really brought the imaging together in my room.   :icon_lol:

Thanks...that will give me something to try.
I'm pretty sure the problems I'm having with
certain upper midrange notes sounding louder
and seeming to jump forward in the soundstage
is due to a combination of placement and room
acoustics.

IMHO, AR makes amps that are pretty tightly controlled. I don't think you need to look elsewhere on that. However, I'm sure Klaus would tell you that you'd be better off w/ the Stratos or Kismet though!

Good luck. The Lor's are a very nice, high bang for the buck speaker.

Room interactions can be such a huge problem. That's why I'm beginning to think  controlled dispersion mid/hi units along w/ multiple subs may be the wave of the future.

Kind of picking up where HiBuck left off, having similar issues placing my Lorelies driven by a pair of Stratos Mono Extremes.

I have what may be the worst room for them.  The TV/HiFi rig is situation in a little alcove that is about 3 feet deep and tapers upward at the top
to a dormer window, this really reinforces the bass boom.  I have pulled them as far out from this as I can without a divorce.  I read on a forum from Odyssey Hong Kong that they were experimenting with placing a port extension of about 10" into the port to calm the bass.  That has helped, but I
still get a strange upper bass/lower mid exaggeration that brings our a lot of background sounds in recordings, movies or TV shows that is really weird.  Right now, watching the Olympics, I can heard every person in the crowd and helicopter and swish of the ski's on the snow louder than the announcer,
this is kind of strange.

Any ideas?
