VSA at CES
« on: 5 Jan 2010, 11:07 pm »
I just talked to Albert and the unfortunately the VR77's won't be at CES, I am totally bummed  But Albert will have a pair of Unifield 3's in the WBT room at the Venetian(29-212) and will probably be available in person to talk about his speakers. Albert did say the first pair of VR77's have been built and he is tweaking them :D I think this is going to be an amazing speaker and I really hope to hear them soon.

I've seen pics of the "prototype" 77 but that was months ago - no telling what they might look like by now.  Too bad they won't be ready for CES - just makes me more appreciative of my 7Se's..........  Hard to imagine a better "rollout platform" than CES....  I'm sure Albert probably has his reasons.

From what I could gather, the 7s were discontinued for several reasons including cost and being too close to the 9's as opposed to squarely between the 9's and his smaller speakers.  I also don't think the 77's are being designed to move as much air as the 7's and will probably have a broader appeal to solid state amp owners.  I think the 7s were absolutely made for tubes - the synergy is pretty special - played a re-mastered Santana live CD for some neighbors tonite LOUD (I got away with this since there was nobody else in their houses to complain!!) and it was simply phenomenal.  The 7's love power and this was the first time I REALLY opened them up and using the APL Super 32-bit DAC Prototype (mostly broken in), you could almost smell the crazyweed in the room - it was THAT lifelike!!

He's totally bummed.  Geez.  Amazing.  No offense, A.  Nice work if you can get it, I suppose.

You lost me there Jim?? :dunno:

The Unifield 3's were supposed to be at the WBT room, but I was in the Kimber room on Thursday and they were there.

Pretty surprising - NO VSA ANYWHERE TO BE SEEN AT CES!!  U-3s were indeed in Kimber room but were not being played for visitors, just very quiet elevator music.  Heard a lot of negative things and not much positive when other manufacturers saw my VR-7s(i-phone pics of my system).  I did hear a number of speakers that would probably work better in my room, but as always, everything has a price.  Used speaker market is too soft at this point to make any moves, but I was definitely disappointed by the conspicuous absence of VSA.

My wife and I were very close to attending this year, primarily in order to meet Albert and see/hear the VR77s.  Things here at home precluded our attending but must admit I'm glad it turned out that way.  I would be big-timed bummed had we gone.  I wonder what happened?  Albert, Joe, Damon....what's up guys?

Kinda useless to join without a new product to launch I guess.

FPlanner, those negative comments are to be expected from the competition yes?  aa

The product line has a big hole in the $4,000 to $6,000 range. This was traditionally the VSA bread and butter range and is doubly critical in a soft economy. Hard to do business when all posted models are over $10,000. The Unifield One or 2010 VR-1 should also come in at no more than $2,000.

Personally I'd like to see a new ground up design for the return of the VR-3 in this price range using the Scanspeak wide surround, a 6.5" AAD and a single side-firing 10" SEAS magnesium.

What ever happened to the new VR-33?? It would cost around $4k? Albert talked to me about this speaker @ RMAF? Haven't heard or seen anything except what Albert told me.

Does anybody know why VSA was absent from CES this year? Cause no introduction of new models is not a reason for not participating in one of the three largest hi fi shows in the world !!!!

PS Cor and Gavin you should hear my VR5's driven by Gryphon Class A pre and power amp !!! Unfortunately Gavin you are living on the other side of the world whereas Cor is just on the other side of Europe  :green:

Recognizing that this is a VSA board, I would very interested in hearing what speakers caught your "ear".  Would you mind sharing that with us?  Thanks.

Economides,

I would love to hear your system especially since it operates at 220V in lieu of our paltry 120....it's gotta be twice as good, yes?
Seriously, if I were anywhere near you, I'd make the effort, trust me.  Here in the USA midwest, I feel like the "motherless child" with no fellow VSA owners to hook up with....bummer.

Unfortunately, as I know, there is no US importer for Gryphon gear
http://www.gryphon-audio.dk/default.asp

they drive my Vrs like no other amplifier I have tried (150 watts in pure class A) and together with EmmLabs TSD transport and DAC2 the result is amazing
