District 9 . . holy shit!!
« on: 30 Dec 2009, 07:03 am »
I dare you to see this!  You gotta get thru the first act (your friends and sig other will leave the room and call you an idiot on the way but ignore them), just DO IT.  Holy shit!!  This here is SOME kinda movie making.  If Oscar ignores this (best actor, editing, animation, set decoration, improvisation- they got one for that?), it is a blight on their soul.  This shit right here, is bold (from South Africa)!

An afterthought . . I coulda started this thread "anybody seen this" or something and let the momentum gain some grass (assuming I'm not alone).  I'm sorry.  I can't help myself.  I didn't mention writing cause of or because of the lead actor, he seems so on time and spontaneous.

You know, I read all of page one of this topic and didn't see anything (whata dummy), but thanks, T and Wolf.  Having looked at the original thread, damn, I had actually posted.  Oh well, it was academic.  I'm usually very much like ED, least from his comments, just not this time (sometimes logic escapes me, depends, with no regrets).

I take you like it more the second time around?  I had the experience once with Sydney Lumet's "Prince of the City".  I was even more in awe of it the third time around.

Wind-  Hey.  It was the first time, sorry that wasn't clear (think I can understand why it wasn't).  I am very hip to Prince of The City and think it's a high one.  FYI, an old one (Peter Yates pre Bullitt and pre what was to follow), The Friends of Eddie Coyle , and a crime drame has been very recently released on DVD.  Hope you check it out.

Jim, I'm with you 100%. I didn't get around to seeing this in theaters because of a back issue, but I finally saw it last week. Let me just say that this is one of those rare films where I have set very high expectations beforehand, and it actually surpassed them upon viewing it. I LOVED this movie.

I must have went to another movie I thought it was a terrible. deplored the the camera style and thought the acting was totally lame. I was looking at my watch 15 minutes into the movie hoping it would be over soon.   Do you really think they are going to give the key code to the dna lab to that guy

Nice when that happens.

Guys:

I watched this one with my wife last night.  She hated it and questioned why would I have ever rented it?  While I had previously read your comments about this movie, it totally blew me away.  If aliens actually visited Earth the reaction of man was accurately portrayed in this film with the one exception that we did not try to blow-up the mother ship.

To those that are yet to see this movie, it is not your typical SiFi film.  My rating 4 stars our of 5.

I think I'm with Ecramer.  After everyone raving about it for months I finally saw it last night on bluray.  I thought the idea for the movie was pretty interesting but I didn't find it all that good.  I did find myself looking at the run time on my Oppo seeing how much longer I had.  I didn't hate it by any means, I guess i was expecting a lot more from all the hype and expected to be blown away like I was when I saw Children of Men or Pan's Labyrinth.  I kept thinking this was going to be the next movie that made me say "wow!".

I'm typically a big SciFi fan and I like films that are "out there" but this one wasn't for me.  To each there own.

Eddie-  Some of the supporting acting was pretty bad.  The guy's employer and father in law, for one, but if you stuck it out, main man kicked out the jams as his journey got going.  So did the movie, IMO.  For sure, yer gonna have to suspend disbelief in this puppy.  The more you can, the more fun there is.  There is a lot to like or, perhaps, not like, in this.  Amidst all the chaos, it has moments I yelped laughing.

+1 for me on this (and I said so in the previous thread too).  And another +2 on the Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth recommendations... :thumb: :thumb:

I found it weak in every way, but I guess I'm still using "Aliens" as my personal benchmark!

I saw a trailer when I went to see another movie and thought that it looked interesting.  I didn't see your comments before I saw it.

I liked the movie.  I wasn't left saying wow, but I thought it was pretty good for a sci-fi film and better than the average movie.   Concept was pretty good and generally well done overall.  I really hate the hurky-jerky camera, although I get why they do it.   Made my wife have to stop watching because it made her sick.

Another OK movie, but not anything special to me.  A few emotional moments from the interaction of parent and child alien, but mostly just a story I watched that I did not fully connect with.

I found it predictable, other than the lack of resolution at the end.
