Thanks guys, I think she will be happy with them.
Fantastic Ed!
Any info on where you got the materials (veneer?) and what method you used for finishing?
Thanks,
Steve
Steve,
I bought the veneer from a gentleman (rfritz) on ebay. He happens to live about 5 miles from me so I go to his shop and pick what I want or buy from what he posts on ebay. It is a a Sapele veneer, it may be a pomelle but I am not certain, some of it looks a bit like a bird's eye pattern and other parts look to be figured so I am not certain. It is raw veneer, first time I have worked with anything not backed, I like the raw best because of the way it works out in the corners although any issues with paper back variety were probably installer issues (me). The raw is more fragile but it worked out without too many issues. This is also the first time I have used anything other than contact cement, this time I used a product called "Heat Lock". You spread it on both the work and the material, wait 20 minutes, then you reactivate the glue by ironing the piece on, it worked well with only a few hitches mainly due to my inexperience with it.
I simply used a wipe on oil base poly by General Finishes, I have used it before with good results and I was happy with the results this time as well. The black is simply a Rustoleum Satin Black spray can(s). I prepped the painted surfaces by applying drywall mud to the edges then sanding, followed by using a Kilz spray-on primer then the Rustoleum.
Best,
Ed
