Could anyone comment on what the combination of solid wood and a serious damping material like Blackhole 5 would work out?

It works well, I forgot to mention to use damping material on the inside. I understand the basic idea is to use a stiffer material (wood or quality ply), which resonates less but at higher frequencies, and then damp the vibrations. I'm not a materials scientist or anything but I think this kinda makes sense....

I used cheap damping from Parts Express, the Black Hole was a bit much to swallow. I guess when it comes down to it I'm not in the camp that thinks that speakers have to be absolutely dead,

The caveats noted above concerning wood movement makes sense too. I read as much as I could find about this before building mine, worried and stressed over it, and then just did it. 18 months later they are fine :thumb: If you look online you can find listings of how much different types of wood change size and/or are prone to warping. My baffle is 7.5" wide, I personally would be wary of using solid wood for anything wider, although someone with more experience probably could.

John,

You should really try the W3-871S driver from TB sometime.  It has much better high end response than any of the other 3" drivers I've tried.

OK OK, I do actually have a pair, just haven't had a need for a new pair of rat coffins lately ;) What's your pick, ported or sealed?

Well, ported will give you a little more extension obviously.  I like ported if you want to listen without a sub.  Of course, that limits power handling.  If you're going to use some sort of sub with them then I'd just go sealed.

So in other words, whichever works best for you! ;)

John, what dampening material are you using?  On the PE site I saw mostly stuff for car doors, apparently I missed something.

Can these TB drivers be used in an dipole application?

Brian, what kind of F3 are you getting in sealed and ported boxes?

Hm, I can't find it on their site either. The stuff I bought was like a cheap knockoff of BlackHole, they seem to have the real thing now so it might have been I got it on closeout, it was fairly cheap. Sorry I can't help there :(

I've got a bunch of that damping material that John used as well.  It was a close-out deal that got scooped up pretty quick.  I'm thinking it's very similar to Whispermat but I've never actually used Whispermat so that's just a guess.

Dayne,

Sealed enclosures give you an F3 in the 125-150Hz range depending on enclosure size.  My Micros are in the mid to high 80's in-room with placement near or on-wall.

Guys, thanks for the info!

Sure wish there were a remotely affordable alternative to Blackhole  :x

Hi John,

Thanks for the link!

One of the guys pointed out this material, the Whispermat II:

Looks quite interesting.  Anyone have thoughts on how it compares to Blackhole?

Ciao,

Dayne
