When I asked a similar question, DougS suggested the YAMAHA YST SW315, 200w servo-sub, available via eBay for around $205, new:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-YAMAHA-YST-SW315-HOME-THEATER-POWERED-SUBWOOFER-NR_W0QQitemZ200416358863QQcmdZViewItemQQptZSpeakers_Subwoofers?hash=item2ea9bef1cf

yes, i would still recommend these.  for $400 for a pair, shipped, you would be hard-pressed to do better.  i would also recommend a pair of the now-discontinued yst-sw215's, that have about the same spec as the 315's, but use a pair of forward-firing 8" drivers; but good luck finding a matching pair.  the 215's are likely still not as fast and tight as a rythmik sub, but faster than the 315's that replaced them.    kinda different price-range, tho.     and, i would prefer a pair of the yammies over a single rythmik, as i much prefer the added spl, lowered distortion and ease of room integration that multiple subs provide.  (may even eliminate the gap of the tightness of a single rythmik.)

another thing to consider would be to get an outboard active x-over - you will get better performance out of your 602's (or any speakers used w/subs, imo), if they and their amps don't have to see any frequencies below 80hz or so.  w/active subs like the yammies, you yust set their internal x-over at their highest point (140hz) so they are effectively eliminated from the equation.

Let's say I need a small/cheap sub to integrate with a pair of FR speakers like the Fonkens, would the Yammy be a better option than, an ApexJr. for instance?

They seem to be pretty popular for low priced surplus components of decent quality. Check here:

That's the idea. I'm waiting to know the shipping cost to India for a pair of drivers and the plate amp. Let's see...  :)

P.S: Here's more info on these:

doug s,

I'm just cursious what other subs you've heard to compare to the Yamahas.  I never would've guessed Yamaha made good subwoofers.

BTW, have you heard a Rythmik sub?  I'm still itching to hear one, but can't afford it yet.

i am sure a rythmik sub would outperform a yamaha.  but, a lot more cash.  if you can afford a pair, go for the rhythmiks.  but, for $400, i'd take a pair of the yammie's.  see another one of my posts about this:

I tried searching for the dual 8" model you mentioned, but when I search for yst-sw215, I only find a smaller, single 8" downfiring version of the sw315.

yes, that's cuz it's been discontinued.  which is why i recommend the sw315.  as i said, you will have to be wery patient to find a matched pair of the yst-sw215's...  when i got mine, i bought one, then found a second one a couple months later...

It's not that I can't find one...  just that the model yst-sw215 is not the sub you referred to, but a single 8" downfiring version:
http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YST-SW215PN-Powered-Subwoofer-Piano/dp/B000MT7RW8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1265303765&sr=8-1
http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200486&CTID=5003300

So I'm not sure which model the dual 8" front firing version is...unless Yamaha just reused that model number for a different product.

my apologies - the dual 8" forward-firing subs are the sw305's...

Just look here. Scroll down to the bottom 4 and pick which one you want or pair you want. Competes directly with Hsu, Epik, SVS, etc...but I have a feeling your problems are more to deal with your main speakers and your room, so a sub or pair of subs may not solve the problem at all.

Best,
Anand.

$899 is hardly cheap although it might be cheerful.
Suggestions within the circle's guidelines would be more appropriate.

Thanks :thumb:
