Hi,

Sorry to muddy this thread but I thought I would let you know that I bought the Alo Rx Amplifier with sony lineout dock.  I didn't want to have to wait a long time for the unit (I guess I'm too impatient  :duh:).

Plus it is $50US cheaper and I was able to buy two products for the same shipping price.  Btw shipping to Australia was $63US.

I also bought a pair of Alessandro Ms1's for this unit.  I'm just starting out in this part of my hifi hobby.

Regards

Rod

No problem Rod.

Given the challenges Justin has with getting the Pico Slim out to people, I think you made the correct choice.

I still don't have mine.

Hi George,

Well I'm still waiting for my Ampzilla monoblocks that have been in Melbourne since mid November 2009.  I was told they should be ready this week.  We'll see  :duh:.

Actually listening to the sony mp3 thru the Alessandro ms1 headphones was a real pleasant surprise.  Great sound from such a small portable mp3 player and much better than the supplied iem's.

Good luck with your purchase and let us know what you think of it.

Hi,

The Alo Rx plus sony lineout dock arrived today.  It was only sent Thursday last week from the US via Fedex.

The sound?  Out of the box it sounds very refined with great resolution.  All over it sounds a level better than an mp3 player using the Alessandro ms1's.

I hope it holds up well.

Good luck George with your pico slim.  I hope it arrives soon for you.

Regards

Rod

Hi,

I'm returning the Alessandro Ms1's to the store for an instore credit.  I was mainly using them for when I was in the office so I don't disturb anyone around me because people complain if you talk or play music (I know but they have right to be able to concentrate).  The sound of the Alessandro's was fine but they were a bit uncomfortable on my head because I use glasses to read the computer screen.

Anyway in their place I bought a pair of Koss Porta Pro (25th anniversary version) and I'm really happy with their sound.  Plus they also feel very comfortable and very good for their size.  The only thing that I have noticed is that they aren't very good in noisy situations but they work very well for me in the office if someone is trying to get my attention or the telephone rings.

Regards

Rod

My guess is I'll probably draw a few flames for this, but what the heck...

Before you go out and spend serious money on a pocket amp, try the FIIO E5 -- yes, really!

I got one for my iPod Nano 5G to drive HD600 phones.  It sounds just fine, and for the money, how can you beat it?  Just for grins, I did a blind  A/B test between that setup and the iPod, my Home Headroom, and the '600's.  And, yes, I can tell the difference.... long as I am playing lossless files ripped from CD, or VBR files.  With MP3, no audible differences.

However, The FIIO sounds pretty good -- not as crystal-clear as the Headroom, but good enough that I often use it at home, as well as portable, simply from laziness not wanting to bother hooking up the iPod to the Headroom amp.  There is no background hiss or noise, either, despite some reviews to the contrary.

It drives the HD600 cans well -- I set the FIIO volume up all the way, bass boost off (not needed with the HD600) and control volume with the touch wheel on the iPod.  There's more than enough drive for anything I've listened to so far.

For $20, it's definitely worth a try.  Having listened to a bunch of the $100-class "Altoids-tin" amps, I can say it's just as good as those.

Oh, yes -- it's small enough to stick on the back of the Nano with a couple strips of velcro, resulting in a combined package with the same outline as the Nano, and about twice as thick.  The whole thing fits comfortably in my shirt pocket.
