Tube preamp with phono for Sig 30.2
« on: 21 Nov 2009, 08:58 am »
Recently, I've been enjoying vinyl through my Sig 30.2, an old turntable, and the phono section of a vintage Marantz receiver.  Not not the ideal setup.  I know many 30.2 owners have good luck with the Eastern Electric preamp, but what about a tubed preamp with a built in phono section?  If buying used with a $1000 budget, what would be on par or better than the EE preamp with an outboard phono preamp in the $200-400 range?

For your phono stage, get the Jolida JD-9.  Great value.  Get a pair of NOS tubes if you want to make an improvement, make it even better with some cap and resistor mods.

I don't have much first-hand experience myself, but check this site out - http://www.high-endaudio.com/RC-Preamplifiers.html - seems to have some good used recommendations in it.  What I like is that a lot of them are old enough that the prices have stabilized (if not rising) so if you change your mind and want to sell something on you don't take much of a hit.

The Audible Illusions 3A and, if you are willing to go Chinese, the Doge 8 are in your price range and have come up on AudiogoN recently.

Cheers

I recently acquired a used Audio Mirror PP1 which uses 12ax7 and 12au7 tubes, has a remote and an MM/MC phono stage.  It's really quite good and the phono stage is high quality.  The only issue I have is the noise floor is a bit too high, so I'm playing around with better tubes and getting an improved power cable.  Used price is around $700-800.
