Phish albums with the best sound?
« on: 2 Nov 2009, 05:15 pm »
While I am far from an expert or their biggest fan, I really like listening to Phish on the hi-fi. I think Slipstitch n Pass is well-recorded as are Rift and Lawnboy to a degree. What do Phish fans consider reference recordings?

Some of it will depend on what you are looking for. Slip, Stich & Pass is a live disc from Europe '97 and has some great stuff on it. If you are looking for more live stuff then there are tons and tons of options.

Farmhouse, Billy Breathes, and Story of the Ghost are all well recorded studio albums

I know there's a massive amount of live recordings and bootlegs. I don't think I'm up for downloading stuff and burning a cd to play on the home rig. But any commercially available recordings that represent the best of Phish music, performances and recordings are fair game. That narrow it down a bit?  :D

Get the "Hampton Comes Alive" Boxset.

Very good sound for live music; with some killer covers!

I can help narrow it down. tell me how many you want and we can go from there. I tried to give you some diverse stuff as far as playing style and song selection as well.

I also just realized I have the two-disc "Junta" album. I got it used some time ago and just dug it out of storage. Listening now. Oh, boy. That's what I was after. I guess I'd say now I'm looking for a good concert recording. The 6-disc Hampton Comes Alive might just be a bit overwhelming. I have read good things about the 1995 NY Eve show at MSG.

Thoughts?

The NYE '95 is a solid rocking show. The 12/7/97 show I listed above is the nasty phunk. Given you like the Slip, Stich and Pass I think you would very much enjoy the Dayton show.

NYE 95 sounds awesome indeed.

This is probably my favorite official live release though, the Ghost is AMAZING:

I was there. Freshman year of college, mid-semester road trip. My first trip to Colorado, we drove straight through the night from Missouri and went directly to Red Rocks. 4 years later I moved to Denver...

Some hilarious stories from that trip and that is one of the best shows I ever saw...
