Frank has been buggin' me for some time to send the unit in (it's the old SL smaller chassis with a several generations old Topp DAC) and I guess I didn't know that size unit could be upgraded to Insight+ status!

Wow! It's one thing to hear it in someone else's system, but when it's in your own, it's amazing. 3 things are immediately noticeable. First is the sound stage, with instruments and voices being in a very particular location (I'm using my MartinLogans), Second is the contrast in dynamic range (soft passages a little softer, loud passages a little louder, and third, gobs of space from the recordings, like reverb and fun stereo effects like that. I have had to cut my listening time short, as I have one of the worst colds I have had in years, develop all of a sudden. Real fun coughing spasms! Oh well. I'll report more when I feel (and hear) better.

Yes, the Insight+ DAC is pretty great.  The dynamic range is something else.

I hope that you feel better soon.  (That cold might be clogging up your sinuses and ears a little, too.)

You are going to have some fun once that cold goes away. I had something similar this spring and I called it my mutant cold virus, a real nasty bugger it was. I lost 10 lbs. because I didn't have an appetite. Homemade chicken soup helped - really. Hope you are better soon.

Thanks guys! I feel much better today, tho I went thru 2 T-shirts last night, sweating like a bastard. My hearing has also improved so I'll give the DAC more time today. I do drink lots of tea and I think tea really helps fend off colds. Yeah, it might be the swine flu, but I'm tough. Besides, the government tried to kill me back in the 70's with the swine flu vaccine, that crippled me for a year. I lost my equilibrium during this time and life was hell. It just slowly improved and I got better. No flu shots for this boy.

Yes, today is much better. My hearing is good so I think I shall play some CDs this afternoon and try to reorganize my brain to the new music (or lack of) that I was missing. Now mind you, I thought the TOPP DAC was good, so don't be ashamed if you still own one. It's output is still better then many CD players. The Insight+ DAC is more refined, more dynamic. I think I heard some things in my brief listening session, that I had never heard before.

Ahh, the bride has brought me some new drugs from the pharmacy. If I get (more) goofy, tell me to go lay by my dish and I probably will.

The pills are working, man. It's nice not trying to cough up a lung! Anyway, spent more time with the DAC today and used my gift from Lonewolfny42 as demos since I hadn't heard most of the music, which was from the NY Audio Rave, volumes 2009, 2008, 2007 and 2006. Thank you Chris!

Many interesting selections. I have come to the conclusion that my speakers now have to go further apart. This has happened in the studio, when I have had upgrades done to the amps and preamps. Or at least I've had to change the toe-in angle a bit. I can't explain it, and I have asked Frank, and he doesn't have am answer right now, either. My guess is that the speed increase of the electronics has something to do with it, but who knows. The attack is fast and massive. Yet the presentation can be very soft and delicate.

Those NYAR guys sure have good taste in music, most was new to me too.
"Mars" from the 2008 disk sure sounds good on AVA gear with the volume set around 11:00 or 12:00.
