« on: 5 Oct 2009, 11:13 am »
I have for sale a beautiful pair of GR Research AV-1 Mini Monitors in new condition finished in natural cherry. Latest revision with the GR-T3 tweeter and parallel crossover networks using Alpha Core inductors and Erse Caps bypassed with  Sonicaps.  These speakers have a very clean, open, and natural sound quality with excellent imaging and depth. Voice reproduction is very natural sounding on both male and female voices. Bass response is very clean and well defined to around 55 hz. Selling the pair for $370.00 plus shipping cost.

Hi Ron,

Great looking pair of speakers.  I'd buy them but shipping to Australia is a deal killer.  The fit and finish of these speakers commands a higher price.  I wish you luck with the sale.

Regards

Rod

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the compliment about my AV-1's. I was very  pleased with how well they turned out not only in appearance but sound quality too. They are very nice sounding speakers on all types of music, but especially on vocals. To me,they sound almost as good as the Neo 2X which I have built a number of pairs recently for other people.Unfortunately, you are right that shipping cost to Australia would be very expensive.

Thanks again for your interest and comments.

Regards,
Ron

Can I ask what's a good power match for these speakers as well as the Neo 2X model?

Looks like you build some very nice cabs.

Thanks.

I would would recommend a minimum of about 50 watts per channel for both the AV-1's and the Neo-2X's. Most high current, low distortion amps should work just fine. Also, your power requirements depend on the size of your listening room and how loud you like to listen. Presently I am using a Parasound HCA 1000A power amp which has a power output of approximately 120 watts per channel into an 8 ohm load. Tube type amps also work very well with both the AV-1 and Neo 2X. If you plan on using a receiver, most of the popular high quality, high current models like Onkyo and Denon work very well.

Being a rear vented type of speaker, they need to be at least 2 feet away from the back wall.

You can plug the ports, but it decreases bass response.

have a good sub so not worried about bass, but how about imaging that close to the wall?

Being that close to a wall will make any speaker's imaging suffer.  However, Danny does an excellent job of designing speakers with excellent on and off-axis response which makes for great imaging.

These speakers are really hard to beat at that price.

I would think a 50 watt tube amp would be plenty good enough power-wise.

Cujobob is correct that the rear port can be plugged which would allow you to place it closer to the rear wall. Since you will be using a subwoofer, it should work just fine. I have some foam plugs that could be used with the AV-1's.

If I didn't have a pair of Paradox 1, I would be all over these.  I think Danny's speakers are just fantastic for the price.
