So a friend of mine asked me to suggest some audio gear for his new house.  He needs sound in three rooms with one being a screen porch.  His budget is $2k so I fogured this was the place to start. 
Needs:                           
Outdoor speakers

Good pair of towers for living room/kitchen.  They like electronica so would need good bass.  I am think a used pair of AV123 X-static which I have seen for $500-600.  Or Medowlarks of some sort.

TV Room
They are not too worried but want something ok.  I was think 3.1 with av123 x series.  Can be had pretty cheap used.

Then I would want to add 1 or 2 used squeezeboxes.

what should I think of for amps?  Maybe a reciver that does dual zone and another T-amp or something for the main living room. 

I have myself confused.

For speakers...I used to have a pair of Klipsch Forte IIs, gave them a lot of electronica with the SETs  Supposed to be excellent performers with the Bob Crites crossover mods, but I never got around to doing that on mine.

$300-450ish used.

You're on to something with the AV123 products. You should really start frequenting the classified threads at their forum.

There are so many good deals that you'll have yourself even more confused in no time! 
Then start looking for good deals on Pioneer receivers.

If this were a matter of helping him purchase a used car, yeah, I'd say you're on your own buddy and good luck, but audio is a different matter.  He might really appreciate your expertise and the quality of sound that you'll introduce him to.  There's good potential in a budget of that size.

For amps, try scoring a used Virtue.  Power at a pittance with excellent sound.  If he's not too concerned about the "looks" - a used diy gainclone is also a top pick for next to nothing.

It's just that I've found that expectations are so different with non-audiophiles that it can be a frustrating experience. BUT! A more helpful comment - a possible option just surfaced in another thread, which is look into active speakers - perhaps those audioengine ones might even fit the bill.
